Job Description
The nationally-ranked School of Public Affairs (SPA) at the University of Colorado Denver seeks a full-time Instructor for a temporary appointment from Aug 11, 2025-May 22, 2026 (which constitutes one academic year) to teach students in our criminal justice program starting fall of 2025. The expected teaching load is eight courses over the duration in-person and online (4 in each semester).
This position has budget approval for one academic year. Moving expenses will not be covered, and we are not able to cover visa sponsorships and expenses for this position.
What you will do:
Key Responsibilities & Areas of Teaching:
- Teach courses at both the Undergraduate and Graduate (Master's) level in the Criminal Justice Programs as needed by SPA
Areas of expertise and teaching areas that we are looking for include:
- Master's Courses: Criminological Theory, Research Methods, Statistics, and Interpersonal Violence courses
- Bachelor's Courses: Statistics and Research Methods, Courts and Judicial Process, Victimology, Violence in Society
- Contribute to the ongoing growth of the Criminal Justice programs through committee service, student mentorship (formal academic advising provided by professional advisors in the School), serving as a second reader on capstone projects, and positively contributing to SPA programs
Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)
- PhD in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Criminology, Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Affairs, or a closely related field.
- Applicants must have teaching experience and effectiveness in Criminal Justice, Criminology, and/or similar programs.
- Demonstrated ability to teach online classes
Substitution for a completed PhD may be considered for a candidate with a JD or master's degree who is a subject matter expert and the person possesses extensive professional skills and expertise related to the field of the degree program and the subject of the course, demonstrated through the holding of substantive professional positions (more than 5 years at minimum, and preferably 10 years or more) in the field and a record of professional accomplishment showing the mastery of topics and skills taught in the course.
Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience designing and teaching courses with a university learning management system (preferably Canvas)
- Ability and experience teaching all or some of the following specific courses:
- Master's Courses: Criminological Theory, Research Methods, Statistics, and Interpersonal Violence courses
- Bachelor's Courses: Statistics and Research Methods, Courts and Judicial Process, Victimology, Violence in Society
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
- A student-centered attitude and outstanding student service skills
- Willingness to contribute to the holistic growth of the Criminal Justice programs
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $57,000 - $60,000 per AY (academic year).
