The Department of Philosophy at the University of Winnipeg invites applications for one probationary, full-time, regular academic staff appointment at the rank of Instructor III. Subject to budgetary approval, the expected start date is January 1, 2026. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience according to the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association Collective Agreement.

The Department has a long commitment to an historical approach to Philosophy and Philosophical education. The successful candidate will teach a wide variety of undergraduate courses, including an introductory course in the History of Philosophy (see https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/academics/calendar/docs/phil.pdf). The normal teaching assignment per year is four full (6 credit) courses, or the equivalent. Priority will be given to candidates specializing in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ancient;
  • Early Modern; or
  • Twentieth-Century Philosophy

Candidates must hold a PhD in Philosophy or have an expected completion date before December 31, 2025.

As per article 14.09 of the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association Collective Agreement for Instructor III positions, while both effective teaching and academic service are part of the normal workload, research is not a requirement.

Applicants are requested to submit the following (all documents in PDF):

  • a cover letter with, when applicable, an indication of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency;
  • a current Curriculum Vitae listing their degrees earned, and outlining their academic contributions (i.e., evidence of effective teaching, service, and/or research);
  • a teaching dossier which includes: (1) a statement of teaching philosophy, (2) a list of university courses taught previously and/or instructional experiences, (3) course outlines from prior teaching experiences, (4) documentation providing evidence of teaching effectiveness, which may contain but is not restricted to peer and student evaluations of teaching, or evidence of inclusive, accessible, and diverse approaches to teaching, if applicable;
  • at least two letters of reference to be submitted directly by referees who have knowledge of the candidate’s teaching, service, and/or research (clarifying in what capacity) to: philosophy@uwinnipeg.ca.

The University of Winnipeg is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and recognizes that a diverse staff/faculty benefits and enriches the work, learning and research environments, and is essential to academic and institutional excellence. In accordance with the University of Winnipeg Employment Equity and Diversity Policy and section 11 of The Human Rights Code, this position is designated for qualified candidates who self-identify as women, racialized persons, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and/or 2SLGBTQ+ persons. Applicants are encouraged to confidentially self-identify at the time of application.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.

Applicants must submit all of the above materials, save for letters of reference, through the University of Winnipeg’s online recruitment system at: https://www.northstarats.com/University-of-Winnipeg. Please click on the “Apply” link at the bottom of the advertisement to submit your application.

Deadline for receipt of applications is October 1, 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
