The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) invites applicants for an on-campus faculty position in History, with a 10-month academic appointment, beginning Fall 2026. Review of applications will begin immediately with the first round of interviews to be scheduled in January 2026.
Applicants should have a Master's degree, Ph.D. preferred, in History or a related field and experience teaching at a college or advanced high school level. Applicants should have at least two years of experience teaching US history at the college or advanced high school level. The successful candidate will teach two or three sections of AP US History per year. They will also teach a section of AP US Government and Politics during one semester and AP Comparative Government the following semester, for a college equivalent 4:4 teaching load.

GSSM encourages the introduction and development of new special topics courses, including interdisciplinary courses and those taught within a directed studies environment. Field of expertise is open; however, any applicants who can teach elective courses in African American History, Middle Eastern History, South Asian History, or East Asian History are strongly encouraged to apply.
GSSM is a public, tuition-free residential school for 11th and 12th graders and is recognized as among the top public high schools in the nation. GSSM includes nationally recognized residential, virtual, outreach, research, and international programs. The school maintains a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and over 90% of faculty have advanced degrees in their field of instruction. Instructors are expected to attend committee meetings, maintain regular office hours, and have occasional evening/weekend commitments. A public-school teaching certificate is not required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities.
Responsibilities of the History Instructor
- Develop course content and methodology to achieve demonstrable student achievement in the area of instruction. Develop a student evaluation system for course content and instructional methods.
- Maintain appropriate class and instruction schedules. Explore, develop, and when appropriate, implement innovative methodology for successful instruction.
- Work with the Department Chair and/or Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/ or VP for Residential Academics in developing, setting, and sharing successful instructional methods.
- Work with students in and out of the classroom and counsel students to increase their understanding, comprehension, and effective demonstration of competence in the course(s). Set and maintain appropriate times for students to meet with the instructor to improve competency.
- Effectively monitor students' progress, identifying weaknesses and strengths, and preparing a program to improve any deficiencies. Report achievements (grades) and academic problem areas in a timely manner as set by the Department Chair and/or Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Residential Academics.
- Support school activities as a learning community by following school guidelines and procedures for all activities, including but not limited to the following: sending guidelines, submitting self-evaluations, providing required data for assessment, proctoring state and AP exams, writing letters of recommendation, and participating in meetings and other events.
- Work with the Department Chair and/or Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Residential Academics to complete GSSM's employee evaluation and faculty growth procedures.
- As appropriate, support the school's mission as a learning community and provider of outreach programs to enhance educational opportunities.
- All other duties assigned by the Department Chair and/ or Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/ or VP for Residential Academics.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- Master's degree in a history discipline or related field required and demonstrated successful teaching, preferably teaching advanced students.
- Excellent communication and motivational skills for high academic results with the target student population.
- Classroom and student management skills (computer entry, grading, etc.).
- Ability to work in a virtual, in-person, or hybrid environment.
Please note that some areas of the Agency may require an official, certified copy of the transcript prior to hiring or within a specific timeframe required by that area after hiring. Failure to produce an official, certified transcript may result in not being hired or termination.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in subject area.
- Experience with gifted high school-aged students.
- Experience teaching virtually.
