Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Department of History and Humanities at Wheaton College (MA) seeks an experienced educator to teach a survey course in African American History in Spring 2026. The applicant will teach either HIST 209: African American History to 1877 or HIST 210: African American History: 1877 to Present, depending upon their experience and expertise.

The course will be scheduled upon hiring of the successful applicant, but likely will meet twice weekly for 80 minutes (either Monday/Wednesday afternoons or Tuesday/Thursday mornings or afternoons), or thrice weekly for 50 minutes on Monday/Wednesday/Friday mornings. It is expected that the instructor will dedicate one additional hour per week to in-person office hours.

Spring 2026 classes run from Wednesday, January 21 to Friday, May 1, with final examinations during the week of May 4–9, and final grades due on Monday, May 11.

Responsibilities of the instructor include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Teaching effectively in an in-person environment that encourages close student-faculty interactions.

• Creating a syllabus (with assistance, if desired, from the Department) to be provided to students and the Department Chair on the first day of class and posted to the course’s Canvas site.

• Selecting and ordering textbooks and/or procuring other course materials prior to the start of classes.

• Teaching with an emphasis on primary text reading and analysis.

• Grading assignments within appropriate time frames and posting grades to Canvas.

• Holding regular office hours and being responsive to student needs.

• Communicating regularly with the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s in History or related field

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in History or related field

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitment ranges for a position, the College considers a number of factors including the budget for the position, the range of the grade, the external market for the position or similar positions, level and scope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevant experience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must have the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.

The per course salary for this position is $5,000.
