Job Description Summary

This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT).

The Software Engineer maintains, implements, and integrates both on premise and hosted systems using primarily Java and web-based technologies. The position is hands-on, agile, team-based development.

The Software Engineer is responsible for:
* Implementing software applications within a development team
* Following a formal development methodology and working within scheduled timelines
* Participating in peer code reviews, documentation, and formal testing

This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services. This position may be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, or different shifts for extended periods.

Physical Demands: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of professional software engineering experience.

Other:
Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of custom interfaces and websites, using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
Knowledge of software development methodologies.

Skill in effective written and oral communication.
Skill in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.
Ability to provide basic mentorship to junior staff members.
Ability to create custom code.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.

Preferences:

  • Strong core Java development expertise (5+ years), including object-oriented design, debugging, exception handling, and adherence to clean-code principles.
  • Experience with Java enterprise frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot), including REST API development, security configuration, and dependency injection.
  • Proficiency with databases including writing and optimizing SQL, database design, and working with complex schemas.
  • Understanding of modern web architecture, including Docker/containerization, CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and deployment processes.
  • Experience with Vue framework

Additional Information:

Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week. Telework is not a guaranteed work arrangement.
