The Opportunity

Monitor the health and welfare of research and teaching animals including swine, sheep, horses, goats, cattle, and poultry and provide oversight to staff working on the care, feeding, and watering of animals. Hire, evaluate, and supervise staff, coordinate work and schedules, and provide staff with necessary training. Work with faculty, veterinarians, students, maintenance personnel, farm services, and others associated with conferences, sales, and shows that are held at the facility.

The Manager will direct the daily operations, ensuring protocols and standards are strictly followed, while providing animals and facilities to advance our mission. The Manager will supervise a team of four, consisting of 1 Assistant Manager and 3 full-time union farm staff, coordinating schedules ensuring adequate coverage to meet animal care and research needs. The Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, training farm staff, equipment and facility upkeep, coordinating facility use for research and teaching purposes, data collection, record retention, and ensure that all Federal, State, and University regulations pertaining to animal care such as the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) , Environment Health and Safety (EH&S), USDA, NYS Department of Health, etc. as well as ensuring that teaching and experimental protocols are met. The Manager will also serve as the instructor for ANSC 2100 Practical Large Animal Handling.

The Department of Animal Science's mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and outreach.The Ithaca Farms Manager oversees the daily operations of the on-campus facilities that support the teaching and research functions of the department. The facilities are located on or near campus and include the Large Animal Teaching and Research Unit (LARTU), the Teaching Barn, Equine Metabolism barn, Stevenson Road Barn, solar grazing sites, and the Poultry Farm (located off Game Farm Road). These facilities support multiple faculty research projects and serve our large core course offerings.

What We Need

  • Associates degree and 4 to 6 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • More than 5 years directly-related experience with swine, dairy and beef cows, sheep, and horses; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience connecting inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing practices to business goals.
  • Experience in teaching / lab setting.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience, including managing a team and coordinating schedules.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, including having reliable transportation or having and maintaining a valid New York State driver's license.
  • Knowledge of animal health issues.
  • Basic understanding of budgeting and financial concepts with ability to balance budgets...
  • Able to lift 50 pounds routinely.
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work weekends and holidays and be on call after hours in case of emergencies.
  • Must be safety oriented.
  • Able to work in varying climatic conditions and be exposed to loud noises, dusty conditions, animal waste, and odors.
  • Must be personable, flexible, possess good organizational and time management skills, and take pride in their work.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Must be able to work closely with regulatory groups such as CARE, IACUC, USDA, and AAALAC.
  • May be required to have completed certification for Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) through AALAS or be eligible for certification.
  • May also require biosafety level 3 training (chemical hazards).
  • Ability to pivot between roles and responsibilities as departmental priorities shift, with a proactive and solutions-focused mindset.
  • Must have and maintain and valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license and be cleared to drive for Cornell University business operations

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science with animal research experience.
  • Experience working with and supervising students in a lab/class environment.
