Position description

The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist in the Thomas Mann Lab, in the area of immunology.

The Candidate will primarily perform research on a day-to-day basis with occasional lab management and organizational tasks. Specifically, research will focus on signal transduction in primary CD8 T cells in vitro or responding to viral infection or cancer in mice. The chosen candidate will be working with mice, performing cell culture, and conducting molecular biology and biochemistry assays. The candidate will use R analysis to design genetic and biochemical experiments. The Candidate will be expected to present work within the lab frequently but informally.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities:

The candidate will work on biochemical signal transduction in CD8 T cells and how it controls the T cell response to cancer. The candidate will perform experiments on primary T cells, using sterile cell culture skills, performing genetic manipulations of primary cells via CRISPR, conducting biochemical experiments including Western blotting and immunoprecipitation, and working with mouse models of viral infection. The candidate will perform specialized analysis in R on proteomics data. The candidate will be responsible for designing experiments, conducting data analysis, and providing periodic reports in the form of figures and slide shows, all under the close mentorship of the PI.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working with mice and collecting cells from tissues
  • Cell culture, including working with primary cells
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience with T cell immunology
  • Molecular biology and biochemistry (plasmid cloning, Western blotting)
  • Experience coding with R
