The project StartUp of Doctor Carolina Trenado-Yuste aims to develop 3D models for the study of induced phenotypic heterogeneity at single-cell level in breast cancer, using approaches in cell biology, tissue engineering, biomaterials and quantitative analysis of experimental and imaging data.
The researcher to be hired within the scope of the above-mentioned project is expected to perform the following tasks:
- Design, plan and conduct cell biology experiments to study the phenotypic heterogeneity of breast cancer cells in 3D microphysiological environments;
- Perform mammalian cell culture, cell maintenance and cellular assays;
- Carry out microscopy studies, including confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy and live-cell imaging;
- Perform quantitative analysis of images and experimental data, applying appropriate statistical methods;
- Perform molecular and cell biology techniques, including immunofluorescence, Western blotting and qPCR.

By order of the Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, Paulo de Carvalho Pereira, dated 30 July 2026, it is hereby made public that an international selection procedure based on documentary assessment is open for a period of 10 (ten) working days, counting from the working day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República, for the recruitment of one Junior Researcher to conduct scientific research activities within the scope of the project StartUp of Doctor Carolina Trenado-Yuste, under an uncertain-term employment contract, on an exclusive basis, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 57/2016 of 29 August, as amended by Law No. 57/2017 of 19 July, with the profile described below, in the scientific area of Materials Science and Engineering, Biomaterials, Bioengineering or a closely related scientific area.

- Perform molecular and cell biology techniques, including immunofluorescence, Western blotting and qPCR.
1 - General admission requirements:
Portuguese nationals, foreign nationals and stateless persons holding a scientific and professional curriculum vitae showing a profile appropriate to the activity to be carried out may apply to this call, provided they meet the following requirements:
- Hold a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Biomaterials, Bioengineering or a closely related scientific area;
- If the qualification was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised under the terms of Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, and any formalities established therein must be completed by the date of signature of the employment contract.
- Have documented experience, namely through peer-reviewed scientific publications, in direct collaboration with clinicians in translational or clinically oriented research projects.
Failure to comply with the two conditions described above will result in non-admission to the selection procedure.
2 - Specific application requirements:
- Minimum of 7 years of practical experience in isolation of primary mammalian cells, cell enrichment or purification, and optimisation of primary cell culture conditions;
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging and widefield microscopy, quantitative analysis of images and experimental data, namely using Python, scikit, numpy and stardist, and molecular biology techniques, namely Western blotting, qPCR and ELISA;
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience with rodent animal models;
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in the design and formulation of synthetic hydrogels for three-dimensional mammalian cell culture. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced training and/or proven practical experience in synthetic hydrogels;
- Scientific track record with at least 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including at least 5 articles as first author or co-first author.
3 - Other skills:
- Excellent command of written and spoken English;
- Previous experience in supervising undergraduate, master’s or rotation students will be valued.
4 - Contracting:
The hiring is carried out through an uncertain-term employment contract, for the period strictly necessary to carry out the activities foreseen under the project, under the terms of the Portuguese Labour Code, as Junior Researcher, with remuneration in accordance with position 38 of the Tabela Remuneratória Única (TRU), corresponding to €2,679.17, under the terms of Article 2 of Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017 of 29 December, subject to taxes and other statutory deductions, plus meal allowance in the amount set for workers employed under public employment contracts.
5 - Place of work:
The workplace will be located at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, and subsequently in Oeiras, in facilities yet to be determined.
6 - Documents that must accompany the application:
6.1 Motivation letter, written in English (maximum 3 pages), which must include a justification of suitability for the position regarding the following aspects:
- experience in isolation of primary mammalian cells, cell enrichment or purification, and optimisation of primary cell culture conditions;
- experience in advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging and widefield microscopy, quantitative analysis of images and experimental data, namely using Python, scikit, numpy and stardist, and molecular biology techniques, namely Western blotting, qPCR and ELISA;
- experience with rodent animal models;
- experience in the design and formulation of synthetic hydrogels for three-dimensional mammalian cell culture;
- relevant scientific track record in the area of the call, including publications in peer-reviewed journals;
- command of written and spoken English;
- previous experience in supervising undergraduate, master’s or rotation students.
2. Detailed curriculum vitae showing a profile appropriate to the activity to be carried out, in accordance with the application requirements.
3. Copy of the PhD certificate or diploma. If the certificate or diploma is still pending issuance, the candidate must provide proof of that situation or a declaration on honour, and the submission of the document will be mandatory by the time the employment contract is signed.
If the qualification was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, published in Diário da República, 1st series, No. 157, of 16 August 2018, and any formalities established therein must be completed by the date of signature of the employment contract.
4. Other documents relevant to assessing the suitability of the profile requested.
7 - Application deadline:
7.1 - Applications, duly completed with all the documents referred to in point 6 of this Notice, must be submitted within 10 working days counting from the working day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República, and sent by email, in PDF format (a single document), indicating the reference IJ_CY/2026_NIMSB in the subject line, to the email address NIMSB.applications@unl.pt.
7.2 — Applications may be submitted in Portuguese or English, notwithstanding point 6.1 of this Notice.
7.3 — The deadline for submitting applications is 23:59 Lisbon time, of the last day of the deadline.
7.4 — Failure to comply with the deadline for submitting the application, as well as incorrect formalisation of the application, will result in the application being excluded. The exclusion decision will be communicated to the candidates by email, for the purposes of the hearing of interested parties.
7.5 — False statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.
8. Selection methods and definition of their respective weights:
The selection process will be made by assessing the curricular background of the candidates, focusing on relevance, quality, timeliness and suitability for the duties to be performed. The assessment criteria are:
- Minimum of 7 years of practical experience in isolation of primary mammalian cells, cell enrichment or purification, and optimisation of primary cell culture conditions - 25%
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging and widefield microscopy, quantitative analysis of images and experimental data, namely using Python, scikit, numpy and stardist, and molecular biology techniques, namely Western blotting, qPCR and ELISA - 15%
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience with rodent animal models - 20%
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in the design and formulation of synthetic hydrogels for three-dimensional mammalian cell culture. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced training and/or proven practical experience in synthetic hydrogels - 30%
- Scientific track record with at least 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including at least 5 articles as first author or co-first author - 10%
Other skills:
- Excellent command of written and spoken English - 50%
- Previous experience in supervising undergraduate, master’s or rotation students will be valued - 50%
The curricular assessment is expressed on a numerical scale from 0 to 20 with the following weightings:
Motivation letter (30%); Detailed curriculum vitae (70%).
The Selection Panel decides by reasoned nominal vote in accordance with the selection criteria adopted and published in this notice, and abstentions are not permitted.
If the Selection Panel deems it necessary or in the event of a tie, the three best-placed candidates will be called for an individual interview. In this case, the scientific and curricular assessment will have a weighting of 90% and the interview will have a weighting of 10%. The final classification of each candidate is obtained by adding the scores awarded by the Selection Panel and dividing the total by the number of Selection Panel members.
In the event of a tie, the decision will be taken by the President of the Selection Panel.
Selection Panel meetings, including those for the final decision, may be held by videoconference. Minutes are drawn up of the Selection Panel meetings, summarising what took place at the meetings, and are made available to candidates on request. Once the selection criteria have been applied, the Selection Panel shall draw up the ranked list of approved candidates with their respective classifications.

10 - Occupation of the vacancy under this call: This call is intended exclusively to fill the position indicated in this Notice. Should none of the candidates demonstrate that they possess the profile required to perform the functions described above within the scope of this procedure, the Selection Panel reserves the right not to award the position under this call.
11 - Participation of interested parties and decision: Notification of the Final Ranking for the Purpose of Prior Hearing:
11.1 - Notifications are sent by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the Administrative Procedure Code.
11.2 - Candidates will be notified of the results of the application evaluation via the email address provided in the application form.
11.3 - Under Article 121 et seq. of the Administrative Procedure Code, candidates have 10 (ten) working days after notification to submit their comments before the final decision. Notification is considered effected in accordance with Article 113 of the same code.
11.4 - Once the prior hearing of the interested parties is concluded, the Selection Panel reviews any submissions made, if any, and approves the final ranking list of the successful candidates.
12 - This Notice is published in Diário da República, as well as on the NOVA and NIMSB – NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology websites.
13 - In all matters not expressly provided for in this Notice, the selection procedure shall be governed, namely, by Decree-Law No. 57/2016 of 29 August, as amended by Law No. 57/2017 of 19 July — which establishes a regime for the hiring of PhD holders aimed at stimulating scientific and technological employment in all fields of knowledge (RJEC); the Administrative Procedure Code (CPA) — approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015; Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017 of 29 December; the Labour Code — approved by Law No. 7/2009 of 12 February, in its current wording, as well as the other applicable regulatory provisions.
