Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Academic Division Dean, the Kinesiology Instructor/Head Women's Softball Coach's responsibilities include teaching a variety of transfer-level and Career Technical Education (CTE) courses within the division, including Kinesiology, Physical Education, and Athletics, overseeing curriculum, and mentoring part-time instructors. The instructor will have a portion of their assignment teaching softball related courses and coaching the college's intercollegiate women's softball team.
Additional responsibilities will include being directly responsible for all functions related to the softball program, such as year-round recruiting, practice and competition scheduling, fundraising, budget management and travel planning. The instructor may be expected to work in a classroom incorporating computer activities, as well as one with a traditional instructional format. Participation as a full-time faculty member in department, division and campus-wide activities is required. The instructor may be required to work/coach/travel during district holidays, have part of their teaching assignment in the evening and/or weekends, and teach courses at the Fremont and/or Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or an off-campus location.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach assigned courses in the Kinesiology, Physical Education, and/or Athletics departments, and employ learner-centered instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.
  2. Teach Kinesiology, Physical Education, and/or Athletics in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.
  3. Coach Women's softball, or any other sport as assigned.
  4. Apply a positive approach to high-level recruiting practices directly supporting the growth and sustainability of the Softball program.
  5. Manage all components associated with program budget, including purchases, district credit card reconciliation, and fundraising efforts.
  6. Maintain and keep current certification in first aid and CPR/AED throughout employment.
  7. Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
  8. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  9. Initiate and enhance institutional and teaching practices and aim to create a culturally responsive and equity-driven teaching environment.
  10. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
  11. Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours and attending department/division meetings.
  12. Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
  13. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
  14. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
  15. Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
  16. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
  17. Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human differences.
  18. Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.
  19. Create an equity-based and welcoming classroom environment.
  20. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
  21. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or other designated locations.
  22. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education;
OR
Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy;
OR
the equivalent (refer to equivalency section below);
AND
Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests;
AND
Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Two years teaching experience in Kinesiology, Physical Education, and/or Athletics at the post-secondary level.
  2. Two years as a head coach of a softball team at the post-secondary level.
  3. Evidence of current professional development via membership or certifications or post-degree coursework.
  4. Experience in marketing programs and fund-raising activities.
  5. Experience in in computer based, sport-specific statistical programs.
  6. Familiarity with business, industry, and the private sector of the labor market.
  7. Experience developing curriculum and/or new programs.
  8. Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning.
  9. Experience creating socially conscious syllabi, equitable classroom materials and inclusive pedagogical practices to promote an inclusive environment.
  10. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with Asian American, African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one's relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students and others.
  11. A commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
  12. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
  13. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  14. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.

Contract Period

This is a regular probationary, tenure track, faculty position commencing Fall Semester 2026. The contract period is 175 days. More information is available in the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO) Contract.

Continuance in this position is dependent on satisfactory performance and evaluations.

Salary Placement

The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track instructional faculty member is $79,803.00 -$122,168.00.
Initial salary placement is determined per Article 16.3 of the faculty contract. Faculty members advance one step on the salary schedule each year and have the potential to reach the current maximum step of $163,412.00, depending on the educational level attained.
