We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering for someone with a passion for driving sustainability and circularity in construction and the built environment. It is ideally suited to someone looking to use their skills in chemical, process, civil, or structural engineering, materials science, or another relevant discipline, to make an impact on resource efficiency and materials circularity within the built environment, supporting the UK’s transition to a circular economy.

Cement production accounts for 8% of global CO₂ emissions, about half of which results from chemical reactions inherent in the clinker production process. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) are used in modern cement formulations to reduce the clinker content and hence reduce associated CO2 emissions, as well as improve performance. The most common SCM used in modern cements is ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), a by-product of steel making. However, closure of blast furnaces in the UK and globally means that GGBFS is increasingly scarce, and the shift to decarbonise the steel sector has focused on the use of electric arc furnaces, which produce electric arc furnace slag that is far less reactive as an SCM.

The post holder will work in the Sustainable Materials at Sheffield (SMASH) research team in the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering, and take a leading role in optimising reactivity and long-term performance of a novel, low-carbon SCM developed by the KTP Company Partner Cocoon Carbon from processed electric arc furnace slag (CocoonEAFS). You will contribute to the aims of the School by conducting knowledge transfer, research, development, and engagement activities.

Although the post holder will be employed by the University of Sheffield they will be predominantly based at Cocooncarbon Ltd, Ealing, London and may be required to work from Sheffield occasionally.
