Job Overview
A staff Lab Manager / Research Associate position is available in the Joiner Lab at the University of Cincinnati (www.thejoinerlab.com). We are seeking an experienced and highly organized scientist to support the day-to-day operations of the laboratory while contributing intellectually and experimentally to ongoing research projects. This position is supported by and is subject to the availability of grant funding.
The position is well-suited for candidates with a background in protein biochemistry or cell/molecular biology. The precise balance of responsibilities will be tailored to the expertise and interests of the successful applicant.
This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
Essential Functions
The Lab Manager / Research Associate will play a central role in both laboratory operations and research, with responsibilities including:
Laboratory Management and Operations
- Overseeing routine laboratory upkeep, including equipment maintenance, inventories, ordering, and shared resources
- Developing, maintaining, and updating laboratory protocols and documentation
- Coordinating with institutional core facilities and ensuring compliance with safety and training requirements
Research and Scientific Contributions
- Leading and contributing to one or more independent or collaborative research projects
- Performing experiments aligned with the candidate’s expertise, which may include:
- Protein expression, purification, and biochemical assays
- Cryo-EM sample preparation and related workflows
- Gene editing approaches and cell-based assays
- Assisting with experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation
Mentorship and Training
- Training and mentoring new lab members, including graduate students, undergraduates, and postdoctoral researchers
- Supporting an inclusive lab environment that values collaboration, scientific rigor, and professional growth
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
Required Experience
- In-depth knowledge of specialized field, process or discipline.
- May require experience with specialized software programs.
Preferred Qualifications Considered
- Master’s degree (PhD also considered) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related field
- Substantial hands-on laboratory experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Protein biochemistry
- Cell biology, gene editing, or cell-based assays
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative working style
- Experience with protein purification and in vitro biochemical assays
- Experience with gene editing technologies (e.g., CRISPR/Cas-based methods)
- Prior experience mentoring or training junior researchers
- Familiarity with laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, and shared resource management
