Duties & Responsibilities:
The Lab/Research Technician will provide expert technical assistance to the principle investigator and assist in the daily running of experiments in a neuroscience lab investigating alcohol misuse. Duties include wet bench applications, rodent handling, rodent survival surgery and behavioral testing. Additional duties include reagent ordering and maintenance of stocks and solutions, maintaining a laboratory notebook, routine lab glassware washing. Some techniques to be used include qPCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry and nucleic acid isolation. The ideal candidate will have experience in rodent handling, behavioral testing and survival surgeries. The applicant will learn how to work independently and in collaboration with other people, improve communication skills, organize laboratory, data analysis, and use of various basic software.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge in chemistry and biology (bachelor’s degree required)
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Strong organizational skills, ability to follow instruction and learn new techniques
- Proficient with quantitative data management and analyses programs
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Endnote
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
- Prior laboratory experience preferred
- Post-bachelor's degree is preferred
