Laboratory and Technical Support Officer
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Laboratory and Technical Support Officer provides high-quality technical support playing a critical role in delivering exceptional educational experiences for Nursing and Midwifery students. This role provides hands-on technical expertise that enables engaging, safe, and effective practical learning experiences for students.
You will work closely with technical and academic staff to prepare, support, and deliver laboratory and simulation-based classes. The role is central to ensuring teaching spaces, equipment, and medical instruments are maintained to a high standard, compliant with safety, hygiene, and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements.
This position also contributes to continuous improvement across laboratory and technical services, supporting best-practice processes, minimising operational risk, and enhancing the overall student and staff experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering high-quality technical support for undergraduate clinical, simulated and laboratory-based teaching activities.
- Preparing, maintaining and cleaning medical instruments, manikins, and associated equipment and resources to ensure readiness for practical learning and teaching sessions.
- Supporting the safe operation of teaching laboratories in line with WHS legislation, hygiene standards, and University procedures.
- Provide administrative and operational support by obtaining quotes, raising purchase orders, and ensuring consumables are readily available for efficient daily operations.
- Assisting with risk mitigation through appropriate cleaning, waste disposal, and equipment servicing practices.
- Providing informed guidance to staff and students on laboratory procedures, technical policies, and safe work procedures.
WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO THE ROLE
- Demonstrated experience working with clinical and simulation equipment relevant to health professional education and training, including preparation, operation, and troubleshooting, ideally including high-fidelity simulation manikins.
- A strong working knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) legislation and the ability to apply safety principles effectively within a laboratory or clinical teaching environment.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage shifting priorities, meet competing deadlines, and take proactive corrective action when required.
- Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, to deliver customer centric service with positive outcomes.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Effective computer and data entry skills, including experience using the Microsoft Office suite, with the flexibility and attention to detail required to quickly adapt to new systems and software applications.
Special Conditions
It is a requirement of this position to hold: Current First Aid Certificate; Current C’ Class Queensland drivers license; Working with Children Blue Card, and The ability and willingness to meet manual handling demands.
