Laboratory Associate, Biological Sciences
The Biology Department at Barnard College seeks a part-time instructor to teach the following undergraduate course during the 2025-2026 academic year.
Fall 2025
The instructor will be responsible for teaching one section of BIOL BC1501: Introductory Laboratory in Organismal and Evolutionary Biology. The instructor will be expected to teach one weekly lab section on a weekday from either 9 am to 12 pm or from 1 pm to 4 pm, exact time to be determined. The instructor must attend a weekly prep meeting on Friday afternoons.
The lab's curriculum is set by the Department's Introductory Lab Director. Introductory biology lab instructors are responsible for teaching, grading lab reports and in-class work, responding to student questions and emails, and working with a team of instructors and staff. Additional responsibilities include watching/reading all pre-lab materials and attending a mandatory 1-hour preparatory session, which all lab instructors attend on Friday afternoons from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Instructors are typically assigned one undergraduate student teaching assistant per lab section for the entire semester.
Pay Rate: $4,610 (= $3,950 for one lab session + $660 for one prep session)
Exact instructional assignments and other academic responsibilities are determined by the Chair or Director.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in biology or a related discipline
- Availability to attend prep meetings on Fridays from 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in biology or a related field
- Experience teaching college-level biology labs
- Strong background in ecology and evolutionary biology
- Strong writing skills
- Familiarity with SmartBoard technology
