BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY
- Perform the assigned duties in Specimen Processing & Send out Lab to assure accurate and timely receipt, order entry, transport, processing, and distribution of laboratory specimens. Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Have the ability to coordinate the activities of all the Specimen Processing staff on all shifts in order to assure accurate and timely processing of laboratory specimens and customer service support in the absence of supervision.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Receive, OE, Process & Distribute, UMHS, MLABS & Send outs:
- Must complete training and be checked off on all benches and be scheduled for sendout training by training specialists. If training is unable to be scheduled must have knowledge of processing of 60% of send out specimens.
- Maintain knowledge base to perform all MLabs specimen processing
- Function with independence on all benches assigned
- Prepare specimens for reference labs including FedEx packaging
- Scan documents to patient files
- Identify, report and correct problems
- Order Entry of Send out tests to SOFT and Reference labs systems
Customer Service:
- Provide total customer focus to meet the needs of every customer, internal (including co-workers) and external, including medical staff, laboratory staff, MLABS clients, patients, and families.
Quality Control:
- Maintain quality control as required for Specimen Processing; including temperature checks on all storage refrigerators and freezers, daily Q.A. of Send out requisitions and other Q.C. projects as assigned.
Safety:
- Comply with all safety procedures/instructions and observe safe work practices. Practice all BSP standards for your unit/department. Serve as a role model.
Communication and Teamwork:
- Use effective communication including written, verbal, and information technology skills. Work effectively with staff to accomplish goals.
Leadership:
- Model professional behaviors.
- Serve as a resource for Specimen Processors and other departmental staff.
- Fill in as the go to person in the absence of an Associate Supervisor or the Unit Supervisor.
In the absence of a supervisor must be able to:
- Check for call-ins or changes to schedule and make adjustments as needed, also notify those affected by the change
- Ensure all staff duties are covered (sweeps, lab assignments, benches, etc.)
- Be available for new hires for questions and concerns
- Continuously monitor workflow making assignment adjustments as need
- Determine appropriate break/lunch times to ensure optimum staffing is maintained at all times
- Determine appropriate work partners to maximize staff skill set
- Ensure staff is prioritizing appropriately
- Knowledge of the mislabel procedure and gather all documentation for supervisor
- Knowledge of procedure for MiChart problems (ext 68000)
- Knowledge of Pathtrack, Soft issues and contact information (PI ext 66740)
- Functional Assistance: Assist with special projects, in-services, huddles, evaluating new equipment and techniques, review procedures, and other additional responsibilities as assigned.
Training:
- Assist Training Specialist and Associate Supervisor as a preceptor for training new employees as needed or requested
Mandatories, Continuing Education, Competencies and Training:
- Complete yearly departmental mandatories as required. Attend departmental, assigned and/or requested continuing education training, classes, etc.
- Complete monthly, quarterly, or yearly competencies as assigned
- Comply with ongoing training for the unit and department
Supervision Received:
Supervision is received from the Associate Supervisor, Training Supervisor, Senior Clinical Technologist, Allied Health Supervisor, the Specimen Processing Manager, or other designated official.
Supervision Exercised:
Function as a Team Leader (as requested/assigned) in the absence of an Associate Supervisor/Supervisor.
In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.
- High school diploma
- Science classes at a college level are required.
- Ability to complete all training and testing.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience
This full time, 40 hour position is on the evening shift and will include rotating weekends, holidays and on-call.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
