Laboratory Technician - (U) - (0256)
This position performs a variety of clinical and administrative tasks in the laboratory. To ensure that patients receive optimal laboratory services, this position is responsible for coordinating the entire test result process from obtaining the specimen to notification of results to maintaining logs and entering data which track lab and test result detail.
*This Position is ON SITE only.*
95% Direct Patient Care
- Performs venipuncture blood collection as needed.
- Instructs patients on proper urine collection techniques.
- Relays information to the patient regarding proper preparation for various lab tests.
- Perform lab tests as follow: Blood Occult, Feces Screening, Hemoglobin A1C, Cholesterol Screening, Urine Pregnancy Testing, Urinalysis, Protime, Blood count: spun hematocrit and other lab tests as added by administration.
- Coordinates processing of lab samples to correct reference laboratory.
- Data entry of patient information and test requisition preparation for samples sent to the reference lab.
- Documents receipt of laboratory reports from reference laboratory.
- Notify physician/nurse of all critical lab levels as soon as possible.
- Ensure safety per OSHA Standards.
- Communicate with hospitals and outside labs regarding missing information, mistakes or problems with lab samples and orders sent.
- Schedules lab appointments using GE Business system.
- Daily use of Touchworks and GE Business scheduling and data entry system.
- Other duties as assigned.
5% Teaching/Training
- Teach residents (on their practice management rotation) proper procedures and laboratory techniques.
- Assist in training medical assistant students.
- Other duties as assigned.
Credentials to be Verified by Placement Officer
- Any one or combination of the following equivalent to two (2) years (24 months): Associate's Degree eighteen months (18 months) in medical laboratory technology (MLT). OR Completion of a vocational training program for Medical Laboratory technology. OR Work experience training in a medical laboratory which provided a knowledge of generally accepted medical laboratory principles and practices.
- One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a medical laboratory technician.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's)
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations and their applications.
- Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.
- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to exhibit strong organizational skills and maintain detailed, accurate records.
- Ability to work successfully as a team member and independently with moderate supervision.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
