Essential Job Duties:
The Research and Training Specialist plays a pivotal role within the LAR Veterinary Services (VS) and Central Procedures Laboratory (CPL). In this role you will get to support and mirror many responsibilities of the CPL/VS Supervisor in their absence or as needed, and also serves as the primary coordinator for training and onboarding new VS team members. Additionally, you will use your experience across a variety of laboratory animal medicine (LAM) species, solid foundation in anesthesia, surgical procedures, and effective training methodologies to help others grow in their knowledge.
Core Responsibilities:
Leadership & Operational Support
- Serve as the acting supervisor for LAR Veterinary Services staff and the Central Procedures Laboratory during Supervisor absences or when delegated.
- Provide day-to-day coordination of staff workflow, scheduling, task delegation, and routine check-ins.
- Foster a supportive environment where team members can develop independence while ensuring smooth daily operations.
Communication & Collaboration
- Act as a primary liaison with research laboratories: coordinate upcoming procedures, advise on protocols, manage scheduling, and facilitate required documentation.
- Meet with potential clients to support project planning, protocol development, and estimation of project costs.
- Build and maintain tissue collection partnerships across CVM departments and external collaborators.
Training & Development
- Lead the design, implementation, and continual refinement of the VS onboarding and training program.
- Serve as the go-to resource for new employee training needs.
- Provide training opportunities for a wide range of learners, including residents, interns, externs, students, and specialized veterinary or research personnel.
- Promote professional advancement for research staff, including opportunities for additional certifications and skill development.
Quality & Compliance
- Assist in the development, revision, and dissemination of SOPs, job aids, and departmental training materials across all of LAR.
- Ensure all staff receive proper training and documentation related to these materials.
- Maintain a clean and compliant work environment in accordance with infectious disease standards.
- Handle medical, biological, and infectious waste according to regulatory guidelines.
- Adhere to all radiation safety, OSHA, IACUC, USDA, AAALAC, and Environmental Health and Safety requirements.

- Support the design, execution, and management of increasingly complex research projects.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Comprehensive experience with modern laboratory animal husbandry across a wide range of species, including rodents, rabbits, dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, amphibians, avian species, and livestock.
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local health and safety regulations, with proven success in applying compliance standards in daily operations.
- Skilled in maintaining and overseeing accurate regulatory records required by multiple governing agencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to delivering exceptional service and support to researchers, colleagues, and institutional partners.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a service-oriented environment.
Required license or certification:
A valid NC driver's license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment.
NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of date of hire OR AALAS/RLATG certification is required within 6 months of eligibility.
