Lead Artificial Intelligence Developer

Auburn University at Montgomery is seeking candidates for a Lead Intelligence Developer. Responsibilities
- Oversee development task allocation, sprint planning, and delivery tracking using Agile practices.
- Oversee production support, performance monitoring, incident response, and version control for deployed AI solutions.
- Serve as the primary technical development liaison between the AI team, business owners, clinicians, and external partners; translate functional requirements into technical specifications and provide status updates to senior leadership.
- Mentor junior developers and interns; create documentation and both in person and recorded training sessions for agency users.
- Define and execute a development roadmap that aligns Medicaid business objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with the development of the Agency's AI solution architecture, coding standards, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Assist the AI Director and AI Ops Lead in the evaluation of emerging AI tools.
- Design, finetune, and deploy LLMs using Transformers, vLLM, and related libraries; ensure models meet performance, accuracy, and bias mitigation standards.
- Build and maintain Docker based inference services, orchestrating scalable deployments across on-premises and cloud environments.
- Integrate Open WebUI to provide user-friendly, self-serve interfaces for model interaction and use.
- Integrate Elasticsearch for searchable logging, analytics, and semantic retrieval of model outputs and metadata.
- Write efficient SQL queries and integrate model outputs with existing data stores and decision support systems.
- Conduct comprehensive testing including unit, integration, functional, security, and user acceptance testing for all AI applications and LLM services.
- Collaborate with the Information Security Office (ISO) to review code for security vulnerabilities, remediate findings, and maintain compliance with NIST, HIPAA, and related standards.
- Assist with the development of proof-of-concept initiatives exploring emerging LLM techniques (e.g., instruction tuning, retrieval augmented generation) and recommend adoption pathways.
- Perform additional AI-related tasks as directed by the Director of AI, and/or the Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum three (3) years of professional software development experience, with at least 1 year focused on AI/ML system design, development, and delivery.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to lead or coordinate a team of developers (formal management experience not required; proven coaching and oversight skills essential).
- Experience in a regulated government or healthcare environment is a plus.
