Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 300 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 250 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft.

Currently, Student Housing houses 51% of UCI's enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI's 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

The Department of Student Housing builds, maintains and operates facilities that promote and support a learning-centered and resident-focused organization. Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent has operational responsibility for the maintenance and repair of all buildings within Student Housing. The incumbent has assigned duties in multiple semi-skilled areas within the building trades to include: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and lock repair. Serves as a work group lead to other maintenance, temporary and/or student staff. Assists Maintenance Supervisor with various tasks. Serves as a resource for resolving maintenance issues and special projects as assigned within Housing.

Required:

  • Ability to follow, model and promote conduct that adheres to the University of California Principles of Community.
  • Plumbing: Ability to troubleshoot and analyze all interior and exterior plumbing problems. Must have the skill to operate a power and hand snake. Must be able to determine if the plumbing problem is to be referred to Facilities Management.
  • Electrical: Ability to troubleshoot and analyze problems with electrical systems. Must have knowledge of breaker systems and time clocks. Must possess the skills to replace, repair, or install: light fixtures, outlets, switches, garbage disposals, heating system and bathroom fans. Must be able to determine and advise the supervisor if the electrical job is to be referred to Facilities Management.
  • Carpentry: Ability to perform minor interior and exterior carpentry projects. Must possess skills in furniture repair, door and doorframe replacement, light framing, repair of wall patching and drywall, acoustical ceiling repair and floor tiling.
  • Painting: Responsible for maintaining the interior or exterior of assigned buildings. Possess skills to prepare surfaces for application of paint materials. Ability to apply paint, varnish, stains, enamel or lacquer to various interior and exterior surfaces. Application can be accomplished by brushes, rollers or spray equipment.
  • Ability to read and write English to submit written reports and work orders.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and serve as the work leader for a small group of Building Maintenance Workers, Sr. Building Maintenance Workers, temporary staff or student staff.
  • Required to operate a motor vehicle. Requires a California driver's license.
  • Experience with and ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain electronic lock systems.
  • Four years of experience in the performance of semi-skilled building maintenance duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Minimum five years maintenance experience.

Preferred:

  • A working knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.

Special Conditions:

  • Available for overtime and weekend work. Work schedules are subject to change to meet department's needs. Department can require overtime work to meet operational needs. Department can operate and assign custodial shifts seven days a week.
  • Must be able to communicate in English - both verbally and in writing - for purpose of instruction and record keeping
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
  • Must be able to pass background check
  • Must be willing and able to be on-call to respond to after hours maintenance issues
  • Must be willing and able to respond to after-hours emergencies
  • Must be willing and able to assist in the event of a disaster
  • Must be able to lift and carry loads over 50 lbs.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $29.28-$31.69 (Hourly).
