Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an APA-accredited and/or NASP-accredited doctoral program with a specialization in School Psychology or a related discipline
  • Experience working as a school psychologist in P-12 schools (e.g., practica, internship, employment)

ABD will be considered, but must have completed degree by date of hire.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

  • Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP)
  • Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina through the NC State Board of Examiners of Psychologists
  • Familiarity with the NASP accreditation process and domains of practice

The department seeks candidates that are committed to working in and contributing to the department’s vision and mission through their teaching, research, or service.

Evidence of success or strong potential for developing significant research, quality publications, and securing external funding is desired in addition to demonstrated experience and cultural competence in education (e.g., working with a variety of student populations that encompass various backgrounds and educational needs).

Description of the Department or Unit

The School Psychology program at Appalachian State is a dual-degree program that awards graduates a Master of Arts and a Specialist in School Psychology degree upon completion. Our program is dedicated to preparing professional school psychologists who are capable of promoting equitable access and supports for children and their families to address their social, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs. The program has been NASP accredited since 1991.

The Department of Psychology has 42 full-time faculty members (31 tenured or tenure-track) with graduate programs in Clinical Psychology PsyD, Experimental Psychology MA, Industrial-Organizational and Human Resource Management MA, and School Psychology MA/SSP. There are approximately 1500 undergraduate majors and 90 full-time graduate students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for teaching graduate courses and advising students in the School Psychology Master of Arts and Specialist in School Psychology Program and teaching undergraduate classes. Other responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a coherent and productive program of research that will impact the profession of school psychology
  • Maintaining publication activity in high-quality journals
  • Supervising graduate and undergraduate student research
  • Advising graduate and undergraduate students
  • Seeking external funding (e.g., to support research, personnel preparation, and/or outreach)
  • Providing professional service at state and national levels and institutional service at program, department, and college levels
  • Providing clinical supervision and mentoring to graduate students
  • Working to extend research, service, training, or other professional efforts to support a range of populations

ABD Consideration: ABD with reduction in rank and salary (see desc. below)

ABD Description

ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate’s salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
