Essential Job Duties:
The Building Maintenance and Operations department is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Electrician to provide technical leadership, oversight, and hands-on expertise in the maintenance, repair, and renovation of electrical systems across the university. This role plays a critical part in ensuring electrical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with NC State electrical codes and standards.
The Lead Electrician works closely with the Zone Shop Supervisor to coordinate labor, materials, schedules, inspections, and communication with campus partners. In addition to leading and mentoring other electricians, this position serves as a key quality-control resource, reviewing work performed by both in-house staff and contractors to ensure readiness for NC State Construction Office inspections.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead, mentor, and support electricians and coworkers in completing electrical maintenance, repair, and renovation work.
- Perform advanced electrical work in laboratories, classrooms, offices, dining facilities, and other campus environments.
- Inspect electrical work performed by in-house staff and contractors to ensure compliance with NC State electrical codes, NEC standards, and university requirements.
- Coordinate with the Zone Shop Supervisor to plan, schedule, and oversee electrical projects and work requests.
- Review electrical plans, estimates, and scopes of work before material procurement and project execution.
- Assemble material lists, obtain quotes, and manage material procurement to support timely project completion.
- Schedule and manage electrical project timelines, including labor needs, power shutdowns, and inspections.
- Identify potential electrical issues early and recommend corrective actions or improvements.
- Evaluate site conditions and develop field changes or alternate plans as project needs evolve.
- Communicate clearly with university departments, supervisors, utilities, liaisons, and customers regarding project scope, timelines, and impacts.
- Prepare and review clear, accurate daily work orders using the AiM maintenance management system.
- Follow up with work requestors to provide updates and ensure a smooth service experience.
- Schedule required electrical code inspections through the Zone Shop Supervisor.
- Assist with annual Lockout/Tagout training and promote safe work practices.
- Ensure all work adheres to safety standards and is inspection-ready when required.
- Perform tasks requiring standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and utilizing various tools. Safely climb and work from different types of ladders to access elevated or below-grade areas (such as roofs, above-ceiling spaces, and utility pits). Be exposed to and work in areas where insects or small animals are occasionally present. All essential tasks must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Lift and transport materials weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations and perform a wide range of physically demanding tasks in varied outdoor environments, ensuring safe handling practices and maintaining productivity in varying weather and terrain conditions.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of local, state and national codes pertaining to the trades assigned
- Computer skills are required for small project estimates, material ordering and correspondence to liaisons, when necessary
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public
- Understand verbal and written instructions concerning electrical issues in an institutional setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid NC State Electrical License (or ability to obtain) and electrical experience in a commercial or industrial environment.
- knowledge of NEC and NC State adopted electrical codes, inspection requirements, and compliance standards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and coordinate electricians and other skilled trades staff.
- Experience in planning and scheduling electrical work, including material procurement and project coordination, to meet timelines.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with supervisors, customers, inspectors, and external stakeholders, including experience using a CMMS such as AiM.
Required license or certification:
- Required to have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to obtain a valid NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire, and must be maintained.
