Job Description:
The Learning Specialist provides individualized academic support and learning strategy coaching for medical, physician assistant, and graduate students at the College of Medicine. This role supports students' development of effective study, test-taking, and self-regulated learning skills; collaborates on the coordination of academic accommodations; and contributes to the planning and implementation of academic support programs and initiatives. Additionally, this role will develop and deliver educational workshops, assist with the development of new support programs/initiatives, and serve as a College of Medicine liaison to the Disability Resource Center liaison.
Learning and Accommodation Support
- Serve as a Disability Resource Center Liaison for the College of Medicine, collaborating to support students' access to approved academic accommodations.
- Facilitate and coordinate accommodations for students registered with the University's Disability Resource Center, including testing arrangements.
- Identify, assess, and monitor students experiencing academic difficulty across all phases of medical, PA, and graduate training, in collaboration with the Learning Specialist and Office of Student Affairs leadership.
- Provide individualized academic coaching and learning strategy support to students with specific academic challenges (e.g. course exam failures, low clerkship/clinical exam performance, extended or unsuccessful board exam preparation).
- Provide ongoing follow-up and progress monitoring to support study and test taking strategy skill development.
Academic Support Coordination
- Schedule and coordinate student-led review sessions.
- Identify and coordinate tutor-tutee appointments, track and update tutor availability and tutor usage by tutee.
- Monitor tutoring expenditures and payroll activity to ensure responsible stewardship of allocated academic support funds.
Program Development and Educational Outreach
- Develop and deliver presentations to support College of Medicine pre-matriculation, orientation, and board exam preparation programs.
- Develop and implement a tutor training program to support tutors providing individual tutoring support.
