Lecturer 12 (PRODIG Plus Fellow), Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Stony Brook University seeks to hire and mentor a fellow for the SUNY Promoting, Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODiG Plus) Postdoctoral Fellowship. PRODiG Plus is designed with two primary goals: (1) increasing the number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and (2) strengthening the pipeline for retention and support of those faculty.

The fellowship is for a 12-month appointment for two years at an annual salary of $80,000 with comprehensive state benefits, with the goal of conversion to a tenure-track assistant professorship at the conclusion of the fellowship. The PRODiG Plus Fellow is expected to help catalyze our campus’ commitment to inclusive solutions-driven research and scholarship at the intersection of sociology and adjacent disciplines. For this position, we seek applicants who conduct research in the areas of environmental justice or artificial intelligence. As a public university dedicated to addressing society’s greatest challenges through research and education, we understand a genuine commitment to student success is key to academic excellence, new discoveries, and societal change. We are particularly interested in scholars who evidence a commitment to inclusive excellence and facilitating an equitable, supportive, and welcoming academic environment for all students, including those who have experienced barriers to higher education.

PRODiG Plus Fellows will engage in scholarship and teaching in clusters that represent key areas in Stony Brook’s current and growing strengths, pedagogical advances, and service in the Department of Sociology, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the broader Stony Brook campus.

Required Qualifications:

  • Be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship;
  • Have a PhD (or foreign equivalent) or relevant terminal degree from an accredited institution completed prior to start date; and
  • Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, work, volunteer/ unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

Preference will be given to candidates who are:

  • Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows.
  • From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first-generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.
  • Active in research related to environmental justice or artificial intelligence.

  3. Sample of representative scholarly work (no more than 3 publications),
  4. Research Statement,
  5. Teaching Statement,
  6. Required Applicant Essay – Please respond in 750 words or less to the following essay prompt: “Please describe how you’ve engaged, facilitated, and/or enhanced diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Examples could include personal, academic, and/or work experience and may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/ community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.”
