Lecturer
The School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a full-time (100% FTE) Lecturer in Environmental Policy and Law to teach, support, and potentially expand our policy and/or law curriculum. This position will primarily support existing policy and law courses in the undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
This is a non-tenure track, 100% FTE position with an initial appointment of two years, with the potential for renewal based on performance and program needs. The role requires a commitment to excellence in teaching, a depth of knowledge and experience in environmental policy and/or law, and an interest in contributing to curriculum that aligns with workforce needs in the School of Environment and Natural Resources.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach a rotation of six classes per academic year. These courses may include existing courses, such as ENR 4400 Law and Legal Process, ENR 5649 Wildlife Policy, and/or ENR 7520 Environmental Science and Law (a fully online, asynchronous course). The new hire may also contribute to the curriculum by developing the content for a new course identified by the Environmental Social Science faculty, such as Introduction to Environment and Natural Resources Law, Conservation Ethics or Methods and Tools for Policy Analysis.
- Review, update, and revise lecture materials to ensure they remain current, reflect best practices in pedagogy (including online education where applicable), and are aligned with course objectives.
- Support student learning by providing timely feedback, holding office hours, and offering individual assistance as needed.
- Evaluate student performance through assignments such as quizzes, exams, papers or class projects.
- Maintain an inclusive and engaging learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
- Utilize Carmen (Canvas LMS) to manage course content, assignments, and communication.
- Stay informed on emerging trends in environmental policy and law and integrate relevant updates into course materials.
Qualifications:
Required:
- A J.D. or masters degree in Environmental Policy, Public Affairs, or related field and significant professional experience in environmental policy and/or law; or a Ph.D. in a relevant field
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively engage undergraduate students in an applied learning environment.
Preferred:
- Experience teaching, training, or mentoring students in environmental policy and/or law.
- Experience with hybrid or online teaching and learning management systems (e.g., Carmen/Canvas, Zoom, or other digital platforms).
- Ability to integrate real-world case studies and interactive learning techniques into course content.
