Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

The Department of English at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a lecturer in English to begin August 2026.

This is a nine-month non-tenure track position that carries a 4/4 teaching load, primarily in composition but with occasional opportunities to teach other general education courses. Appointment is renewable, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. The university provides opportunities for promotion to higher non-tenure track ranks for eligible instructors.

Lecturers take an active role in departmental service and are enthusiastic about working with first-year and non-major students. The successful candidate will have significant experience teaching composition and be ready to contribute to a dynamic and innovative program.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • MA in English or a related field (e.g. rhetoric, professional writing, journalism, linguistics) at time of application
  • Significant experience teaching composition at the post-secondary level

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a dynamic and innovative composition program
  • Experience teaching both in person and online

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The English Department at UNCW is composed of three tracks: Literary and Cultural Studies, Professional Writing, and English Education. We house BA, BA/MA, and MA programs, as well as a Certificate in Professional Writing, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Science and Medical Writing, and minors in English, Digital Humanities, Journalism, and Linguistics. Faculty members also have opportunities to teach as part of interdisciplinary programs across campus, including the Honors College. Our department features the Wentworth Travel Fellowship, an endowment which allows students to travel the world for literary research. College/School Information:

The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration as well as combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in Spanish and English. The CHSSA also houses the Gender Studies and Research Center and the Academic Resource Center, which offers full-service, professional advising for all CHSSA undergraduate students.

In addition, the CHSSA offers a full complement of interdisciplinary minors and post baccalaureate certificates including: Africana studies, American studies, Asian studies, classical studies, conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, Hispanic studies, journalism, Latin American studies, medical humanities, Middle East and Islamic studies, Native American studies, professional writing and publishing, science and medical writing, and women's, gender, and sexuality studies.
