Department Information

The mission of the PALS program is to educate students to become informed, engaged, and ethically responsible citizens of the world through our offerings in the core curriculum; the major and minor in Philosophy; the major in Interdisciplinary Studies; the minors in Black Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Women's Studies; and courses in Religious Studies. The department consists of six tenured/tenure-track faculty members, three lecturers, and three limited-term lecturers.

Job Summary

The department of Philosophy, Religion, and Interdisciplinary Studies at Georgia College and State University has 2 job openings at the rank of Lecturer to begin August 2026. We are seeking excellent teachers who can recruit majors into the Philosophy and/or Interdisciplinary Studies programs. The successful candidates will teach courses in Philosophy, Religion, or Interdisciplinary Studies at the undergraduate level and will be expected to mentor students.

While the lecturer position is non- tenure-track, lecturers are eligible to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer after 5 years.

Primary purpose
Instruct academic courses and support the department, college and university goals by supporting the academic environment to benefit the educational mission of the University.
The faculty employee is expected to contribute to the departments educational mission. Faculty will be expected to instruct our students in the respective disciplines at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The faculty employee is expected to have:
1. understanding of the principles associated with teaching and learning.
2. strong communication skills and successful higher education teaching experience.
3. a developing research agenda.

This position carries a non tenure track status.

Responsibilities

Faculty - Teaching/Instructing -
Teaching Responsibilities
- Full-time instructional load teaching in areas of expertise within the academic discipline
- Regular course meetings and instruction
- Mentoring Students
- Other teaching responsibilities

Knowledge and ability to convey current philosophies, practices, and theories related to the academic discipline.

Faculty employees also contribute to the Georgia College core curriculum by teaching topical freshman (GC1Y) or sophomore seminar (GC2Y) courses. All Georgia College faculty share the responsibility of teaching our core curriculum and providing foundation courses for majors and non-majors alike. To carry out our public liberal arts mission, we seek faculty with the desire and ability to engage students as they launch their intellectual journey.

Required Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with one or more of the following Areas of Specialization (AOS):

• Philosophy of Law with the ability to mentor pre-Law students.
• Philosophy of Technology with the ability to speak to issues such as AI Ethics.
• Philosophy of Film
• Philosophy and Literature
• Abrahamic Traditions with the ability to incorporate feminist and queer perspectives

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to teach discussion intensive classes
• Demonstrated ability to teach writing intensive classes
• Demonstrated ability to teach courses that include diverse perspectives, related to the US and globally

We are seeking a candidate who will be successful in recruiting Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies majors and promoting student success.

Educational Requirements
A Ph.D. (terminal degree) in the discipline taught at the time of the appointment is expected.
Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S. 3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials))
