Lecturer in Environmental Science

Brandeis University seeks to hire a teaching faculty member in Environmental Science to join the Environmental Studies Program in Fall 2026. This is a two year, part-time appointment outside the tenure structure, covering the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 academic years. It carries a 5 course teaching load spread over the two years (spread over 4 semesters).

Requirements for the position include: a Ph.D. (or an MA/MS and equivalent experience) in environmental science or allied fields in the natural sciences, completed by the time of appointment; and a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate level. All candidates with expertise in any branch of environmental science will be considered: e.g., geology, hydrology, chemistry, physics, sustainability, or biology. We seek a candidate whose scientific expertise qualifies them to teach courses complementing current courses in ecology, climate science, oceanography, and participatory science currently taught at Brandeis. The ability to teach skills based courses to prepare our students for employment are highly desirable.

The Brandeis Environmental Studies Program offers an undergraduate major and minor. We take an interdisciplinary approach to examining environmental issues through coursework in the housed in all four schools at Brandeis University (Arts, Humanities, Social Science and Social Policy, and Science, Engineering and Technology). Our innovative learning programs take students into the field and the community with a focus on experiential learning.

Teaching responsibilities will include the following courses: a multidisciplinary introduction to environmental monitoring course (offered each year) and two additional electives. The candidate will take an active role in advising undergraduate majors and minors in Environmental Studies, advise senior theses and independent projects as appropriate, and take an active role in Environmental Studies curriculum and program development. Candidates with evidence of successful teaching of diverse populations of undergraduates are especially encouraged to apply.

The application should include the following: cover letter, CV, a draft syllabus for one potential elective course (previously taught or in the planning) suitable for undergraduate students, and the names and contact information for two references, at least one of whom has knowledge of the candidate’s teaching abilities. The cover letter should address teaching interests and experience. Review of candidate materials will begin December 1, 2026 will continue until the position is filled.

This appointment is to a position that is in a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 509.

The salary range for this part-time position is (nine month, academic year salary) is $36,000 to $50,000.
