Position Details
Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of Kinesiology at SHSU seeks to recruit and retain a faculty with various skills, expertise, knowledge and backgrounds. Qualified applicants with experience working in different and varied settings and/or who demonstrate a commitment to serving student populations with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills are strongly encouraged to apply. The SHSU student body is over 50% first-generation college students and SHSU is a recognized Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). We are seeking candidates who demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in and with socially, culturally, and economically varied communities.
The duties and responsibilities of this position include: Teaching assignments will include undergraduate (taught at main campus in Huntsville, TX) coursework (both face-to-face, hybrid, and online), teaching the equivalent of four 3-hour courses each semester during the fall and spring semesters. Summer teaching may be available, but is not guaranteed.
Participation and/or planning of student engagement events. Mentoring undergraduate students. Performing university and professional service, which may include planning and leading events for fitness and wellness initiatives. Contributing to ongoing program evaluation and improvement in the undergraduate and graduate programs within the department.
Educational Requirements for the Position
A graduate degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Fitness and Human Performance, or related discipline from an accredited institution is required with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Kinesiology and/or exercise science.
Successful candidates must have at least 2 years of kinesiology/leadership/teaching experience in the human performance, kinesiology, exercise science, or fitness industry.
Experience Required for the Position
3+ years teaching experience in Kinesiology. Experience teaching lifetime health and wellness, foundations of kinesiology, functional/anatomical kinesiology, exercise physiology, research methods in kinesiology, or other similar courses. Certifications and/or experience in online teaching and course content creation. The ability to teach a variety of kinesiology courses. Experience in managing/supervising others. Use of technology in instruction, and experience with distance/online education is preferred. Experience mentoring students with workforce preparation and/or career exploration is preferred. Use of high impact instructional practices (team-based learning, active learning, etc.)

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Department of Kinesiology at SHSU includes a faculty, students, and staff from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills (https://intranet.shsu.edu/academics/health-sciences/about-the-college/faculty_staff_contacts.html#kinesiology). Currently, the department offers BS degrees (https://intranet.shsu.edu/academics/health-sciences/kinesiology/) in Human Performance and Wellness Management, Clinical Exercise Science, Clinical Exercise Science 3+2 to Masters in Athletic Training (MSAT), Physical Education Teacher Education (double major), and Kinesiology; with a proposed Bachelor of Science in Sport Management (tentative start date of Fall 2026) and MS degrees in Kinesiology-Sport and Human Performance and Sport Management; and minors in Sport Coaching and Kinesiology. The Department of Kinesiology is located on the main campus in Huntsville, in the recently renovated first floor of the Lee Drain Building and inhabits 20,000 sq. ft. of space which includes all of the labs and faculty offices (Watch this video for a virtual tour https://youtu.be/-nCkTSgvI4Y).
LOCATION:
There are multiple options for places to live near our multiple campuses. Sam Houston’s main campus is located in Huntsville, Texas. The city of Huntsville is nestled in the East Texas Piney Woods and is located on a direct route between Houston and Dallas. With a population of approximately 40,000 (excluding SHSU), Huntsville offers the simplicity of small-town life and easy access to surrounding larger cities including Conroe (where the COHS Health Professions and SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine is located), The Woodlands (where the Graduate Sport Management and Nursing Programs are offered), and Bryan/College Station. Full of Texas history and charm, this county seat is home to multiple museums, annual festivities, antique stores, year-round outdoor activities, vineyards, golf courses, lakes, and a beautiful state park. In a little over an hour after leaving the main campus, you can arrive in downtown Houston. This major city provides access to large entertainment venues and professional sporting events. If you prefer life on the water, Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston are a short commute, and Galveston Island and the Gulf coast are a two-hour drive from Huntsville.
