Lecturer in Physical Education and Health Pedagogy

Situated on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people in Vancouver, Canada, the School of Kinesiology in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Physical Education and Health Pedagogy. This is a term position for three years, with the possibility of further renewal. The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed upon between the University and the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will hold at least a master’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a closely related field. Candidates must demonstrate: (1) expertise in developing and delivering physical education, sport, and exercise programs; (2) the ability to design effective, developmentally appropriate activities; (3) experience in adaptive physical activity for individuals with developmental challenges and disabilities; and (4) skill in teaching within diverse and intercultural communities. Preference will be given to candidates who: (1) have prior teaching experience or formal training in pedagogy; (2) possess experience coaching or working in community-based activity programs; and (3) demonstrate a strong understanding of performance analysis and skill development in children and young adults.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in leadership and health pedagogy, adaptive physical activity, culturally responsive physical education, and coaching. These courses are designed to prepare undergraduate students for careers in education, coaching, and community-based activity programming. Teaching responsibilities include developing course materials, facilitating experiential learning opportunities, and evaluating student learning and performance. The successful candidate will also mentor teaching assistants and collaborate with other instructors within related subject areas. In addition, the candidate will contribute to service activities, such as serving on the Outreach Advisory Committee, which oversees community initiatives like Active Kids. The annual teaching load for this position is 21 credits (equivalent to seven courses), which may include teaching and teaching-related duties as assigned by the Director.

This position is subject to budgetary approval. The expected starting salary range for this position is $110,000 - $125,000 per annum. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate's qualifications and experience and by their placement on the career progress increment scale within the UBC Faculty of Education.

  3. a brief teaching dossier (two to three pages maximum), including a statement on teaching philosophy and examples of applications of that philosophy;
  4. evidence of teaching effectiveness (including teaching/course evaluations, peer-reviews of teaching, and sample course syllabus, if available);
  5. an equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID) statement (one page maximum) that describes and documents your contributions to EDID through your teaching, service, and community engagement, addressing the following three areas: (1) understanding of and knowledge about EDID, (2) track record in advancing EDID, and (3) future plans for EDID; and
  6. names and contact details of three academic references. Letters of reference will only be requested for candidates who are advancing to the next stage in the search process.
