Lecturer in Translational Immunology

About the Role

Hull York Medical School is entering an exciting new phase of strategic growth in research and education. Building on recent successes and major institutional investment, we are seeking an exceptional academic with expertise in translational immunology to join our expanding Centre for Biomedicine.

This role offers an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious researcher to shape world‑class biomedical science.  We’re driving an ambitious new research strategy that tackles some of the biggest challenges in biomedicine, focusing on themes in which we have research critical mass and expertise: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Biology, and Diabetes & Metabolism, with a commitment to innovation across boundaries.  By harnessing emerging technologies, prioritising women’s health, and embedding climate and environmental considerations into everything we do, we are creating interdisciplinary solutions for a healthier future. These themes offer rich opportunities for collaboration and impact build on the University of Hull’s strong performance in REF 2021, where over 80% of our research was rated world‑leading or internationally excellent.

Applicants with expertise in immune cell signalling, inflammatory mechanisms, tissue injury and repair, or host–pathogen interactions are particularly encouraged. We are also keen to hear from candidates whose work aligns with metabolism, vascular biology, platelets, or redox signalling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to high‑quality, internationally excellent research in translational immunology.
  • Develop competitive, externally funded research programmes.
  • Produce high-impact, REF‑returnable research outputs.
  • Contribute to commercial interactions and knowledge exchange activities.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in biomedical science and medicine, particularly in innate and adaptive immunity.
  • Supervise research students and support their academic development.
  • Contribute to the wider academic life of the Centre for Biomedicine and Hull York Medical School.

Our Environment and Facilities

You will join a vibrant, collaborative community supported by significant new infrastructure, including:

  • Over £40M investment in the Wound Innovation Institute, providing unique translational and interdisciplinary opportunities.
  • A new centre of excellence in advanced imaging (£1M+).
  • Cutting‑edge facilities for thrombosis, haemostasis, and metabolic research.
  • Access to the University’s high‑performance computing system (VIPER).
  • Expertise from the Centre for Excellence in Data Science, AI and Modelling (DAIM).
  • Support from the Hull Health Trials Unit (HHTU).

These resources will enable you to build an ambitious, future‑facing research portfolio with real clinical and societal impact.

Our Values

We are proud to be a values‑driven medical school. We expect all colleagues to uphold and contribute to our core values:

Everyone Counts: We champion diversity, respect and inclusion.

Pursuing Excellence: We are innovative, ambitious, and committed to high‑quality research and teaching.

Socially Responsible: We work to improve health and wellbeing across our region and beyond.

Collaborative: We build partnerships and recognise the strengths each person brings.

We particularly welcome applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the University of Hull workplace, including women, people from global minority backgrounds, people with disabilities, and LGBTQI+ colleagues.

Applicants are asked to submit a CV and covering letter addressing the criteria in the person specification. Applications will be shortlisted strictly on this basis.
