Position Overview

The Department of Engineering Education (https://eed.osu.edu) at The Ohio State University is accepting applications from candidates of all engineering backgrounds for a full-time Lecturer appointment to teach first-year engineering courses in the Department of Engineering Education. Candidates with significant prior teaching experience can request consideration for appointment at the level of Senior Lecturer. The appointment would begin in August 2026 for the 2026-27 academic year, continuing in future years based upon performance and enrollment.

The Department of Engineering Education offers a 4-credit hour General Education class, Exploring Citizenship in Engineering Contexts, taken by engineering students as well as those across other majors; the course combines information literacy, research inquiry, and communication learning outcomes with teamwork to support students in exploring, defining, and proposing an actionable intervention for a sociotechnical problem area.

The course fulfills the university general education theme requirement, Citizenship for a Just and Diverse World, and uses various perspectives on citizenship as a lens through which students explore the relationship between engineering and society. To explore the roles and responsibilities of engineers, students discuss, and evaluate readings on citizenship, ethics, engineering and society, systems thinking, and community engagement. Developing information literacy skills, exploring perspectives on citizenship, teamwork and communication skills, are essential to this class.

This position will need to allocate 25% to service that is integral to the courses writing-intensive nature and multi-section structure. The lecturer will spend this time training, supporting, and managing the courses undergraduate graders (~15%) and providing writing development support for all students enrolled in the course (~10%).

The Ohio State University will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.

All courses are taught in person on the Universitys main campus in Columbus, Ohio.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Doctorate degree or equivalent in Writing and Rhetoric, Communication, English Literature, Comparative Studies, History, Philosophy or a related area that supports interpretive, critical, and analytical approaches to questions of technology and society.
  • Experience teaching technical, professional, or business writing and/or communication
  • Experience using a variety of citation styles (MLA, APA, IEEE, etc.)
  • Scholarly or pedagogical experience in one of the following areas, as applied to socially-grounded, writingintensive, or ethically engaged instruction: writing, rhetoric, and literacy studies, professional communication, ethics, cultural studies, sociology, education
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty
  • A commitment to or demonstrated efforts in teaching that reflect Ohio States Shared Values.
