The English Language Institute (ELI), a department in the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, is seeking highly-qualified, experienced instructors of academic writing for one or more openings in its Summer EAP intensive program for newly-admitted graduate and professional students at the University of Michigan. All positions and specific course assignments available are subject to enrollment. The Summer EAP program meets in person on U-M's Ann Arbor campus. Housing and transportation are not provided.

Program dates: July 6 - August 14, 2026

Teaching Schedule: Monday/Wednesday, 9:00-12:00

Effort: 40% summer half-term appointment for each course assignment.

ELI instructors plan and deliver high-quality language instruction following each program's curricular guidelines and in accordance with best practices in EAP instruction. Instructors are required to attend pre- and in-term program meetings, as well as an end of program debrief. They are also expected to meet with students outside of class as needed and to provide regular, timely feedback on all assignments, as well as end-term assessments and guidance for future study.

Required:

• Master's degree or higher in TESL/TEFL/applied linguistics, or a master's degree or higher in a related field with documented coursework in the areas of applied linguistics, second language acquisition, classroom practices, and second-language pedagogy
• At least two years of ESL/EAP teaching experience at the university level
• Excellent communication skills
• Familiarity with the conventions of academic writing and speaking across disciplines
• A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
• Applicants must have legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

• PhD in TESL/TEFL/applied linguistics, or closely-related field
• Experience teaching EAP/ESP to (post-) graduate/professional students in the U.S.
• Experience living and working abroad and/or learning a second-language

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
