Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

The Head Coach is responsible for the overall organization, direction, supervision and administration of Mansfield’s NCAA Division II Men’s & Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Programs. Duties include: recruiting student athletes within the rules and philosophy of the NCAA, PSAC and Mansfield; evaluating student-athlete talent – both academically and athletically; ensuring the retention of student-athletes to Mansfield, emphasizing academic priorities to student athletes; organizing/conducting all practices; providing appropriate strategies for competitive success; providing direction/assignments to assistant coaches; related administrative tasks; fundraising; and maintaining appropriate communication with students, other coaches, university staff, parents, alumni and the media.

Description of Duties

To plan, direct and organize all aspects of training, practices and contests in collaboration with assistant coaches.

To direct and be involved in the recruitment of athletically and academically qualified student-athletes and to ensure that recruitment practices are consistent with all NCAA, PSAC and Mansfield regulations.

Supervision of assistant coaches, any manager(s) or student employees

To plan and/or participate in fund-raising and alumni engagement activities associated with the sports of Cross Country and Track & Field and the overall intercollegiate athletic program.

To assume responsibility for appropriate administrative tasks such as equipment inventory, travel arrangements, budgetary oversight, and game management.

Chart/report countable related athletic activities (CARA).

Work with NCAA Clearinghouse to track student-athlete eligibility.

Track recruiting with the Compliance Assistant Internet program.

To assume other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics

Decision Making

Makes decisions about the following elements:

All elements related to recruiting and scholarship funding

Competition strategy

Practice planning

Fundraising efforts, in collaboration with the Director of Athletics

Alumni engagement activities, in concert with the Director of Athletics

Personnel decisions, in collaboration with the Director of Athletics and Human Resources

Must be adept at problem-solving; both in long-range situations and immediate “game-time” situations.

Will move decisions about budget planning, compliance issues, and larger institutional priorities to the Associate Director and/or to the Director of Athletics.

Fiscal Responsibility

Develops and monitors operating budgets in cooperation with the Director of Athletics.

Develops and administers NCAA Division II scholarship budget and monitors this with the Compliance Coordinator.

Is responsible for fundraising efforts and Alumni engagement activities that benefit the Cross Country and Track & Field programs, the Department of Athletics, and Mansfield.

Supervisory Responsibility

Will supervise all assistant coaches, managers and student employees associated with the Cross Country and Track & Field program.

Minimum Requirements Profile

Bachelor’s degree.

Previous cross country and track & field coaching experience.

CPR, AED, First Aid certification

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree

Three years of NCAA collegiate cross country and track & field coaching experience.

Evidence of ability to successfully recruit and retain students.

Evidence of success in coaching.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must be able to demonstrate an ability to recruit student athletes, organize comprehensive Cross Country and Track & Field programs and to manage all aspects of these Division II programs.

Must possess excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills

Must be able to demonstrate a commitment to academic and athletic excellence

Must have a general understanding of NCAA Division II rules and regulations and be committed to their implementation and observance.

Must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship both on and off the field and must also demonstrate a commitment to diversity.

Demonstration, through past accomplishments and behaviors, of the ability to support Mansfield’s principles and values of Character, Scholarship, Culture, Service (http://www1.mansfield.edu/mansfield-creed) and Mansfield’s strong student-centered vision and mission is required.

Other conditions of employment include verification of all earned degrees through the receipt of original transcripts, acceptable background clearance check reports, authorization to be employed in the United States or the ability to obtain prior to commencement of employment, and positive references.

Must also possess a valid driver’s license and have certification in CPR and First Aid within six months of the commencement of employment and must maintain certification during employment.

Background Clearances

Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors. In order to qualify for a provisional appointment, the Applicant Acknowledgement Consent Form, Provisional Hire Form, Pennsylvania State Police and Justifacts portion of the clearance process must be successfully completed prior to your start date.
