Library Assistant, University Libraries (UPDATED)
The Library Assistant helps provide access and circulation services in the J. Thomas McCarthy Library at the Doheny campus. The position supports circulation services, print and digital course reserves, archives, interlibrary loan, and access to library spaces, print materials, and equipment. The Library Assistant is a full-time, limited-term position.
Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles).
Start Date: Immediately
Expected End Date: June 30, 2026
Position Hourly Rate: $19.32
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports circulation and access services for the J. Thomas McCarthy Library, including circulation desk operations, stacks maintenance, course reserves, and inter-library lending (interlibrary loan, Rapido/RapidILL, document delivery, etc.)
- Performs opening and closing functions of the library at designated times
- Works collaboratively with librarians, staff, and student workers on the management of physical spaces and collections
- Collaborates with other Access Services staff to train and supervise student workers
- Assists with the collection of statistics including circulation, gate and head counts, reserves, physical and electronic interlibrary loan usage, intercampus mail tracking, and study room usage
- Assists with archives and special collections projects
- Requests event setups and room reservations for the Doheny campus in the campus events system (25Live)
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Work hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 8 hours per day (typically 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Tuesday through Thursday and 9:30 am - 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday). During finals, intercessions, summer, and holidays, the schedule is subject to change. Weekends and evenings may be required.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Circulation Coordinator, Assistant Director of Access Services, Archives and Special Collections Librarian, and/or the AVP of Libraries and Academic Resources
Job Requirements:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of library access services processes, including circulation services, interlibrary loan, collection management, and stacks maintenance.
- Knowledge of integrated library systems and automated circulation systems.
- Familiarity with the ALA Code of Ethics and copyright and open access best practices as they relate to academic libraries.
Abilities and Skills:
- The position requires a strong customer service orientation and excellent organizational skills as well as a passion for operational effectiveness.
- Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
- English comprehension and communication proficiency required; Spanish or another second language desired.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adapt, and learn new skills.
- Ability to work well with diverse students and faculty and with non-traditional students.
- Demonstrated success with managing projects and/or personnel
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills
- Willingness to innovate in response to evolving requirements of the academic community
Education:
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science at an accredited college or university, or close to completion, required.
Experience:
- Experience utilizing circulation modules of ILS
- Experience with stacks maintenance in an academic library
- Experience working in library access services
