Position Summary: Department of Biology is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1. The Life Science Research Professional 1 will work under general supervision of Professor Dmitri Petrov and/or his delegated lab representative and must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. This position will play a critical role in generating high-quality genomic data that underpins the lab's research programs. The technician will be trained by senior members of the lab and will contribute to multiple projects, including but not limited to microbial evolution and ecology, conservation biology, and fly genomics. Technicians will receive mentorship and opportunities for intellectual engagement in the work and may earn co-authorship on publications resulting from projects to which they contribute substantively. It is critical that this position exhibit the abilities to practice sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies and procedures as they relate to this job function - the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical. The Life Science Research Professional 1 will perform high-throughput DNA extractions and next-generation sequencing library preparation in support of the Petrov Lab's research programs in evolutionary genomics and molecular ecology. Responsibilities include genomic DNA extraction from diverse biological samples, preparation of amplicon and whole-genome sequencing libraries, maintain accurate records of protocols, samples, and experimental metadata, assist with basic processing and organization of sequencing data, contribute to the smooth operation of the laboratory, including reagent preparation and inventory management, take over the role of Lab Safety Coordinator and, other duties may also be assigned based on a candidate's interests and experience.

This is a 100% FTE, 1-year fixed term, non-exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience with specific protocols or methods is not required but interested candidates should have experience working in a wet lab environment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow and optimize protocols
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a highly-interdisciplinary and collaborative team

The expected pay range for this position is $32.58 to $38.48 per hour.
