Life Science Research Professional 1

The Torok Lab, located in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, is seeking a Life Science Research Professional (LSRP) to join its team. This person will work under the general guidance of the Principal Investigator and will contribute to research focused on liver fibrosis and cancer biology. The lab is focusing on the intersection of metabolic and mechanical signals driving cancer invasion, applying various approaches including animal models, multi-omics, spheroid and organoid models, as well as in vitro methods, and analysis of patient samples.

The Life Science Research Professional 1 will perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects and independently conduct and analyze experiments. The LSRP1 will work with mammalian tissue cultures under Standard University-approved protocols and will create laboratory buffers and reagents. The person will assist with animal care, breeding, and genotyping. Experiments will be performed independently to help postdocs and students with their work. The position also requires accurate record-keeping of experiments and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Duties include:

  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with basic animal surgery and IV injection. Animal breeding, genotyping.
  • Possess initiative and a desire to acquire new skills.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including PCR, genotyping and protein assays.
  • Experience with isolation of PBMC.
  • Experience or exposure to cell culture techniques.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and collaborators.
  • Be very organized and efficient.
  • Experimental design, execution of plan, and presentation of data to team.
  • Utilization of good documentation practices.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.
