Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Department Manager and the Supervisor/Lead, incumbent is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA. The Maintenance Mechanic independently performs a variety of semi-skilled preventative and general maintenance tasks, not requiring a licensed technician, involving the installation, removal, diagnosis, repair, alterations, and preventive maintenance, of buildings, their associated utility systems, various parts, equipment, and assemblies, on a regular and continuous basis. Required skills will include knowledge of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, doors and windows, building hardware appliances, floor and ceiling systems, roofing, and basic construction methods. Independently analyze problems in order to determine and obtain the necessary information, organize and analyze the information, form conclusions, and present conclusions/proposals verbally or in writing as requested. Complete proper repairs using correct materials displaying a high level of workmanship while following safe work practices. May assist other mechanics in diagnosing and repairing campus equipment with complex, unusual and/or very difficult problems; assist other skilled trade workers in maintenance and repair of buildings and campus facilities. Experience in the use of building and maintenance, parts and materials, and standard hand and power tools is required. The position is physically demanding and the necessity to work varying and sometimes extended hours under difficult conditions should be expected. The ability to read, write, and speak English, to prepare forms and paperwork associated with the various tasks, to operate a personal computer, and to drive a car or small truck are also required.
Salary & Compensation

Qualifications
- 5 years experience working as a Maintenance Mechanic or similar position outside a University setting. (Required) Or
- 3 years work experience as a Facilities Mechanic or similar position within a University or similar setting. (Required)
- Working knowledge of plumbing fixtures and procedures, and the ability to independently perform a variety of semi-skilled plumbing repairs. (Required)
- Working knowledge of basic electric theory, wiring, and 120/208v electrical systems and low-voltage 12v/24v electrical systems, and the ability to independently perform semi-skilled electrical repairs. (Required)
- Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment including motors, fans, heaters, air conditioners, and controls, and the ability to independently perform semi-skilled mechanical repairs. (Required)
- Strong knowledge of building materials and equipment, including the ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled carpentry and general maintenance repairs. (Required)
- Working knowledge of cardkey door locks and their operating systems, including the ability to use a portable programmer to identify and resolve problems. (Required)
- Knowledge of safety standards and safe working practices, including the ability to select appropriate tools for each task assigned and to use these tools properly and safely. (Required)
- Basic math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; understand fractions, decimals, and percentages; and compute basic formulas such as area calculations. (Required)
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English at a level sufficient to properly carry out job duties, including the ability to read, interpret, and understand architectural plans, specifications, and all applicable policies, procedures, and rules. (Required)
- Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision; capable of properly prioritizing assignments and making appropriate adjustments when there are changes in workload or competing deadlines. (Required)
- Proficient in the use of computers and mobile devices, with the ability to learn and use software programs for work management, including Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Maximo; capable of retrieving workflow information, job assignments, and entering material and labor data. (Required)
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with staff, management, students, residents, guests, and contractors. (Required)
- Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including standing, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping, pushing, pulling, and crouching for extended periods; lifting up to 50 pounds; working on ladders; working in dirty, noisy, wet, humid, and extreme temperature conditions; capable of distinguishing different colors; and available to work overtime, nights, weekends, and various shifts as required. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
- Other Type of Degree Graduation from an accredited vocational or technical school with a concentration in Maintenance Mechanic trade. (Required)
- Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
Special Conditions for Employment
- Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
- Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
- Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
