Stanford University is seeking a hands-on Maintenance Shop Supervisor to lead the maintenance team responsible for supporting Stanford's critical campus energy infrastructure. This position oversees maintenance activities that keep Stanford's Central Energy Facility, Process Steam Plant, Redwood City Central Energy Hub, and campus-wide utility distribution systems operating safely and reliably 24/7.

The Maintenance Shop Supervisor leads a skilled team of electricians, instrumentation and controls technicians, and mechanical maintenance technicians responsible for maintaining chilled water, low-temperature hot water, steam systems, utility distribution infrastructure, metering systems, and campus street lighting.

This is a key leadership role within Energy Operations, responsible for maintaining the reliability of infrastructure that supports research laboratories, healthcare facilities, and campus operations across Stanford University. Candidates with backgrounds in power generation, district energy systems, industrial utilities, or military propulsion systems are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the Maintenance Team

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily work of electricians, IC&E technicians, and mechanics supporting central utility systems.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate maintenance activities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
  • Coordinate work with plant operations, engineering teams, contractors, and campus partners.
  • Utilize CMMS systems to plan, assign, track, and report maintenance activities.

Maintain Safe and Reliable Operations

  • Promote and enforce a strong culture of safety, ensuring compliance with all safety policies including LOTO and Safe Work Permit programs.
  • Ensure all work complies with applicable environmental, regulatory, and university safety requirements.
  • Participate in root cause analysis, forced event reviews, and incident investigations.

Plan and Manage Maintenance Work

  • Develop and maintain effective maintenance procedures and work processes.
  • Coordinate planned maintenance outages and reliability improvement efforts.
  • Support troubleshooting and problem-solving for complex mechanical, electrical, and control systems.

Develop and Support the Workforce

  • Mentor and develop maintenance personnel through training, apprenticeship programs, and professional development.
  • Participate in hiring, performance management, and employee development initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment focused on safety, reliability, and accountability.

Support System Performance and Planning

  • Work closely with Energy Operations leadership, engineering, and operations teams to improve system reliability and performance.
  • Assist in maintenance planning and budgeting for campus energy systems including chilled water, low-temperature hot water, and street lighting systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field or an equivalent combination of technical education, training, and experience.
  • Two or more years of experience managing facilities operations and maintenance staff in an environment with a variety of building types (administrative offices, classrooms, laboratories, residential & dining facilities, auditoriums, etc.).
  • Ability to apply engineering fundamentals and maintenance best practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing service contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, developing, and implementing programs.
  • Ability to interpret planning specifications, documents, working drawings, and related reports.
  • Ability and willingness to support 24/7 energy system operations, including occasional off-hours response when required.

Certifications and Licenses Required

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to drive day or night.

Work Standards

  • When conducting university business, must comply with California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience maintaining industrial or utility mechanical systems.
  • Experience supervising maintenance teams in central utility plants, power plants, district energy systems, refineries, or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Prior military technical experience, particularly in Navy propulsion, power generation, mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation systems, is highly valued.
  • Experience leading or coordinating multi-discipline maintenance teams.
  • Experience developing maintenance procedures and operational documentation.
  • Experience with Maximo or similar CMMS systems.

Compensation

The expected pay range for this position is $151,297 to $179,501 per year.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

Work Environment

This role supports mission-critical infrastructure that operates continuously and may require response to emergency situations outside normal business hours. Work may involve exposure to industrial environments including equipment noise, heights, confined spaces, and elevated temperatures.
