Job Description Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology seeks a highly skilled and motivated person to lead the Mobile Eye Clinic and OPTIC Lab. The operations of its innovative Electric Vehicle (EV) Mobile Eye Clinic and manage the Ophthalmology Technology and Innovation Central (OPTIC) Lab. Launched in June 2024, the OPTIC Lab is a collaborative hub for advancing eye care through teleophthalmology, artificial intelligence (AI), remote monitoring, wearable technologies, and blindness prevention programs. The Mobile Eye Clinic, a cornerstone initiative aligned with Penn Medicine's Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (CSAP) targeting carbon neutrality by 2042, delivers accessible vision care to patients aged 21+ in underserved communities using eco-friendly practices and advanced diagnostic technologies.

This dual-role position oversees the Mobile Eye Clinic's daily operations, including patient diagnostics, telemedicine consultations, and sustainable logistics, while managing the OPTIC Lab's research and innovation activities. The successful candidate will ensure seamless integration of cutting-edge technologies, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and support scalable blindness prevention models.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee technical and site logistics while monitoring the operational metrics.
  • Manage the daily operations of the EV Mobile Eye Clinic, including patient registration via digital tablets or mobile apps, sequential diagnostic testing (Marco TS-610 for visual acuity, Visionix VX 650 for IOP and corneal assessments, Maestro2 OCT for imaging, Optos Camera for wide-field fundus photography, and Reichert Device for corneal biomechanics), and private telemedicine consultations with an attending ophthalmologist.
  • Coordinate logistics for 3-4 operational days per week during spring, summer, and fall (offline in winter), visiting one location daily to serve 20-30 patients, with the unit parked at a central fleet base for overnight charging and preparation.
  • Supervise onboard and training personnel, including 1 driver, 2 technicians, 1-2 medical students, and 1 physician; ensure compliance with emergency protocols, maintaining an emergency kit and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Position is contingent upon continued funding.

$79,500.00 - $90,000.00 Annual Rate
