Job Description
This position is responsible for management of the University's high-performance research computing functions. This position provides infrastructure support for the high performance computing cluster and develops structure to manage resource demand growth. Additionally, this position will provide consultation and support to Boston College faculty and principal investigators' research computing project needs. Provides faculty and their research groups with consulting, user support, and training in relevant applications and tools, sharing expertise and support for research design, analysis, and grants. Supports users of research facilities and assists with managing, analyzing and producing projects.
Roles/Responsibilities:
- Serves as a key strategic partner for Boston College faculty, research departments, and programs in advancing the Boston College research mission, and will work with the director develop long-term plans to support faculty research through HPC
- Monitor and stay current with trends in research computing, such as container technology, latest gpu and cpu hardware, hpc cluster management tools, storage tools/administration and cluster and user experience software.
- With Faculty governance and Director, implement and maintain research computing policies to ensure equitable access to Boston College resource infrastructure.
- Manages a team of 2 systems administrators and a research consultant.
- Coordinates the HPC infrastructure with other relevant ITS groups, to develop, implement, and maintain research computing infrastructure that meet the expanding needs of faculty and research programs across Boston College.
- With ITS leadership secure funding for upgrades and acquisition of HPC infrastructure, storage and equipment.
- With Director, meets with research stakeholders to identify computing needs and works with vendors to identify relevant hardware and software to meet needs.
- With director, leads a team that provides guidance and support to Boston College researchers with instrumentation data capture, compute and storage workflows for data analysis and integration and long-term preservation of research data
- Closely collaborates with ITS and Faculty on strategic and operational leadership for the research computing space
- Collaborates with ITS leadership to understand computing and data needs, current practices,
- Stays current with opportunities for faculty, researchers, and research programs across Boston College.
- Serves as an advisor of the cluster governance committee.
- Ensures proactive outreach and training to the research community and fosters direct relationships with researchers
- Working with other the IRB and other Boston College offices, coordinates data management initiatives including data management planning, best practices, and compliance with funding agency requirements
- Provide on-site system administration and technical support to the Boston College core facilities as needed
- Develop documentation and training materials.
- Conduct tutorials and workshops and deliver lectures for the entire research community to include faculty and graduate student consultants on research- and computation-related methods and the use of related software
Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $124k to $155k. Salary commensurate with relevant experience. This is not a fully remote position (hybrid flexibility at the discretion of management).
Requirements
- BA/BS or MA/MS (preferred) in computer science or related field.
- Ability to work with faculty and researchers to address their research technology needs.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills to include presentation skills.
- The ability to lead a high-performing, customer-oriented team dedicated to advancing the University's research mission.
- Experience with HPC systems administration and database administration.
- May be required to work additional hours to meet project/unit deadlines and timeframes.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues, gather resources to address issue, and implement solutions.
- Ability to adapt within a rapidly changing technical environment.
- Forward-looking views about, for example, opportunities created by AI and/or the implications of data science on academic disciplines
Preferred/additional requirement:
- Experience managing and protecting restricted data.
- Experience managing HPC infrastructure.
- Experience working with faculty or clients in a computational domain.
- Experience developing and delivering tutorials, workshops, and lectures.
- Some experience collaborating in proposal development and/or grant submission.
