Mass Spectrometry Specialist

This exciting part-time (0.8 FTE) permanent Mass Spectrometry Specialist role is available immediately within Technical Strategy & Operations. Part of the Department of Biosciences in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, based in the Biocatalysis Building on the Streatham Campus, Exeter.

Summary of the role

We are seeking a Mass Spectrometry Specialist to join the University of Exeter’s Mass Spectrometry (MS) Facility, which provides analytical support to academic and commercial research across biosciences and life sciences technology.

The facility supports Exeter’s research priorities and serves as a core platform for externally funded collaborations, including contract and commissioned research. Following a £1.7M investment from the BBSRC 24ALERT scheme and the University, the MS Facility will soon install a new high-resolution liquid chromatography (LC)-MS/MS instrument interfaced with an automated hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) system, enhancing capacity for proteomics, structural studies, and metabolomics. The facility is also equipped with LC-triple quadrupole MS/MS and GC-quadrupole time-of-flight MS/MS instruments, supporting a broad range of quantitative and untargeted workflows.

As a Mass Spectrometry Specialist, you will be responsible for the daily operation of these instruments, including maintenance, troubleshooting, method development, quality control, and data interpretation. You will also support project design and costing, offer technical guidance to facility users, and contribute to training and compliance procedures.

In addition, you will coordinate the provision and usage of laboratory resources—including space, financial records, equipment, and consumables—and contribute to the delivery of analytical services for both internal academic and external commercial research projects. A strong working knowledge of health and safety protocols is also essential for this role.

Strategic importance of the role:

This post plays a key part in the University’s strategy to further develop the ISO 9001-accredited Mass Spectrometry Facility, supporting high-quality academic outputs, industrial collaborations, and growth in commercial services. By ensuring operational excellence and maintaining ISO 9001 standards, you will contribute directly to Exeter’s research reputation, financial sustainability, and engagement with strategic partners.

We are looking for an individual with demonstrable expertise in mass spectrometry, who can work independently while contributing collaboratively to research projects, and who brings excellent communication, time management, & problem-solving skills.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details.

The University of Exeter is an equal opportunity employer. We are officially recognised as a Disability Confident employer and an Athena Swan accredited institution. Whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented in the workforce.

We offer some fantastic benefits including:

  • 41 days leave per year
  • options for flexible working
  • numerous discounts at leading retailers
  • onsite gyms on all of our campuses & a cycle to work scheme
  • sector leading policies around maternity, adoption and shared parental leave (up to 26 weeks full pay), paternity leave (up to six weeks full pay) and a new Fertility Treatment Policy
