Mathematics Instructor- TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science Program
The TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science Program seeks a dedicated and innovative Mathematics Instructor to engage and inspire high school students from underrepresented backgrounds in developing essential mathematical skills and conceptual understanding. This instructor will play a pivotal role in fostering academic excellence, critical thinking, and confidence in mathematics, preparing students for post-secondary success.
This is a part-time position during the academic year (scheduled Saturdays for 4 hours) and up to 20 hours per week during the 6-week summer program.
- Develop and implement engaging, standards-aligned mathematics lessons that promote problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and real-world application.
- Set clear, measurable learning goals and use formative and summative assessments to track student progress and inform instruction.
- Create an inclusive and respectful classroom environment that encourages students to take risks, persist through challenges, and embrace a growth mindset.
- Establish and communicate high expectations for student behavior and academic performance aligned with the Upward Bound mission and values.
- Incorporate diverse instructional strategies, including technology and Learning Management Systems, to meet the needs of all learners.
- Collaborate with program staff and other instructors to support students' overall academic success and college readiness.
- Analyze assessment data to adjust instruction and provide targeted support for student achievement.
- Ensure a safe, organized, and engaging learning environment that fosters student confidence and enthusiasm for math.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff to build partnerships that support student growth.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field.
Experience
Two (2) years of teaching experience at a high school level or above, which must include: Working with diverse, underrepresented, and first-generation college-bound students. Curriculum development and instructional design. Teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Math courses.
Additional Requirements
Current Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification in Secondary Mathematics Instruction or Provisional Certificate. (Must upload a copy of your certification with your application)
