Mechanical Workshop Assistant

Location:

Keble Road, Oxford, OX1 3RH

The Department of Physics at the University of Oxford is seeking a motivated and practical Mechanical Workshop Assistant to join the Mechanical Engineering Group (MEG). The MEG operates across two centrally located workshops and provides high-quality mechanical engineering support for a wide range of research projects within the University and through international collaborations. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop hands-on engineering and workshop skills in a professional, research-focused environment. While previous workshop experience is helpful, full training will be provided for the right candidate.

About the Role

As a Mechanical Workshop Assistant, you will support the day-to-day running of the workshop and help maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment in line with University guidelines. You will assist with preparing materials and components for machining or assembly, including cutting, deburring, marking out, and other essential preparatory tasks under the supervision of senior technicians. The role also involves helping to manage stock levels of raw materials and consumables, ensuring supplies are kept up to date and accurately recorded.

The role will support coolant and waste-management processes in accordance with safety and environmental regulations and, once trained, operate basic workshop machinery such as bandsaws and pillar drills. You will contribute to prototype construction, assembly of experimental apparatus, and installation of mechanical systems, working closely with engineers and technicians. Additional responsibilities include routine checks and minor maintenance of workshop tools and equipment, as well as reporting faults or safety concerns to the Workshop Manager.

Clear communication will be key, as you will help relay information between the shop floor and the Workshop Manager, providing updates on progress, materials, and issues affecting workflow. Record-keeping will form an important part of your duties, particularly regarding stock, equipment uses, and project tracking.

This post is based at the Denys Wilkinson Building (DWB) in Oxford. You will be required to complete safety inductions and obtain certification for workshop equipment as part of your training.

About You

You will be practical, reliable, and safety-conscious, with a strong interest in mechanical engineering and a commitment to supporting high-quality technical work. Excellent attention to detail, good organisational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a busy technical team are essential. You should have strong communication skills and a proactive approach to maintaining a safe, efficient working environment.

To succeed, you should be educated to GCSE level (or equivalent), including Mathematics and English, and demonstrate a natural aptitude for mechanical or technical work. You will bring good time-management abilities, the capacity to follow technical instructions accurately, and the ability to maintain clear records. Strong interpersonal skills and basic IT competence (email, spreadsheets, databases) are also required, along with a positive, collaborative attitude and a focus on safety.

Although not essential, experience in a workshop, engineering, or manufacturing setting—or familiarity with workshop tools, machinery, and health and safety procedures—would be beneficial. Experience handling materials, equipment, or mechanical assemblies, forklift experience, or a clean driving licence would further strengthen your application.

Additional Information

The successful candidate must undertake University safety training and comply fully with departmental health and safety policies, risk assessments, and workshop procedures.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 21 April 2026. Please upload a CV and supporting letter as part of your online application.
