Medical Assistant - Radiation Oncology
Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse and in collaboration with the clinical nursing team, the Hospital Assistant III supports patient care delivery within the Radiation Oncology department. This role performs Medical Assistant duties, assists with complex medical procedures, and provides reception desk coverage as needed. The position requires the ability to work across multiple Radiation Oncology locations and to support both clinical and administrative workflows in a fast-paced specialty care environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support
- Assist nurses and providers with complex medical procedures, including HDR procedures for prostate and gynecological patients and Gamma Knife procedures, requiring knowledge of sterile technique and participation within the sterile field
- Perform routine clinical functions such as taking and documenting vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and chief complaints
- Assist with medication reconciliation and update patient medication lists
- Support patient preparation for exams and procedures (e.g., laryngoscopy, wound care)
- Perform sterile processing procedures in outpatient clinic settings and maintain required logs
- Act as a chaperone for providers as needed
- Float between Radiation Oncology and other Cancer Center locations as required
- Transport patients safely and monitor patient flow through the clinic
- Obtain specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures in accordance with policy
- Maintain mandatory logs (e.g., temperature logs, crash cart logs)
- Assist with referrals, insurance authorizations, and provider communications
- Ensure medication cabinets remain locked and comply with infection control and safety standards
Administrative & Front Desk Support
- Provide reception desk coverage during breaks, lunches, and absences
- Check in patients, schedule and reschedule appointments, and manage follow-up visits
- Obtain authorizations and respond to MyChart messages
- Perform scheduling and documentation tasks using UCSF electronic health record systems
Communication & Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with providers, nursing staff, and front office teams to coordinate patient care
- Communicate patient delays, service issues, and pertinent clinical information
- Use approved communication standards when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff
- Assist patients with concerns or complaints using conflict-management skills
- Identify opportunities for operational improvements and share suggestions with leadership
Operations & Clinic Support
- Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms, labs, and clinical areas
- Order, track, and manage supplies and equipment, ensuring items are current and not expired
- Assist with scheduling complex procedures and coordinating services
- Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
