Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine, consisting of approximately 40 people. This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of biochemistry, molecular biology, and other related disciplines.
The department provides instruction to undergraduate 1st year medical students in biochemistry, molecular biology, as well as the regulation of metabolism. The department provides instruction, guidance, and research experience to graduate students seeking advanced degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology. The department supports an array of faculty (10), directed research programs, many of which are supported by extramural grants and /or contracts.
The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and to the profession through activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional organizations, as consultants, and through other activities.
Job Duties:
The Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) at East Carolina University is seeking a (12-month, At-Will) Medical Research Scientist to support the advanced operations of its Mass Spectrometry (MS) Core Facilities. Located on ECUs medical campus, the MS Core provides high-resolution mass spectrometry services supporting metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, and structural proteomics across multiple research programs. The facility fosters a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and offers expert consultation in experimental design, sample preparation, data analysis, and method development.
The Medical Research Scientist will be integral to ensuring technical excellence, delivering high-quality, reproducible data, and developing new analytical methodologies that advance the Cores mission. This research-focused role supports multiple projects simultaneously and provides training and technical support to internal and external investigators, helping expand access to advanced mass spectrometry technologies and drive innovative biomedical research.
Client-Related Lab Activities (55%)
- Provide sample preparation services for investigators using established protocols.
- Acquire mass spectrometry data using sophisticated mass spectrometry instrumentation and established protocols.
- Provide the Core Director and clients with preliminary analysis of mass spectrometry data.
- Communicate project status updates to the Core Director in weekly meetings.
- Train graduate students, faculty, and staff in sample preparation and data analysis.
Administrative Duties (30%)
- Track samples throughout intake, processing, analytical, and post-analytical processes. This includes maintaining previously analyzed samples in case additional analyses are necessary and usage records of sample cohorts for billing purposes.
- Implement and maintain laboratory safety plans, consumables, and chemical inventories. Order chemicals and consumables as needed.
- Assist the Core Director in the annual University Core Facility renewal process.
- Work with the Core Director to develop new experimental designs, analytical methods, and data analysis workflows.
Instrument Maintenance (10%)
- Maintain laboratory instrumentation and perform quality control checks on instrumentation.
- Contact contracted vendors for service and maintenance issues as needed.
Professional Growth and Continuing Education (5%)
- Attend seminars, training, and development workshops to enhance knowledge and technical skills.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Masters degree in physical science, life science, or medical science-related field; or will accept in substitution a Bachelors degree in physical science, life science, or medical science-related field and three years of relevant experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
- At least one year of experience working in a biomedical or analytical research setting, including experience with analytical separations (e.g., chromatography, HPLC, FPLC) or mass spectrometry instrumentation.
- Experience with separation science or mass spectrometry.
