About the Center
The Making Mentors Program is a school-based initiative that partners with NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) to support autistic high school students through mentorship, academic guidance, and hands-on STEAM engagement. The program centers lived experience, empathy, and relationship-building to improve student outcomes and postsecondary readiness.
Position Summary
This position exists to support autistic high school students through consistent, relationship-based mentorship delivered by college mentors with personal or in-depth experience with autism and neurodivergence. The role is part of a funded initiative examining how mentorship grounded in lived experience impacts academic, social, and postsecondary outcomes for autistic students. While many mentors may identify as autistic, the program welcomes individuals who bring authentic insight, empathy, and a strong commitment to student support.
Principal Responsibilities
- Mentor one NYC public school student throughout the 2025–2026 academic year (approximately 40%)
- Meet with assigned mentee four times per month, including in-person visits at NYC high schools (30%)
- Participate in weekly Zoom check-ins with the mentor team to reflect, troubleshoot, and share best practices (10%)
- Collaborate with program staff and peers on hands-on STEAM-based projects (10%)
- Provide academic support, college readiness guidance, and encouragement tailored to student needs (10%)
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position, requiring in-person high school visits within NYC and remote participation in weekly Zoom meetings.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The position will not include any supervisory responsibilities.
Evaluation & Supervision
Mentors will meet with the supervisor on an as-needed basis for evaluation and assessment.

NYC Pay Transparency Act Statement (Part-Time)
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly pay range for this position is $28.85–$30.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Qualifications
- Ability to commit to mentoring one NYC public school student for the full academic year
- Availability for four in-person mentoring sessions per month within NYC
- Willingness to participate in weekly virtual mentor team meetings
- Interest in or experience with STEAM-based learning activities
- Ability to provide academic guidance and college readiness support
- Strong communication skills, reliability, and commitment to student-centered mentorship
- Personal lived experience with autism or meaningful experience working with autistic or neurodivergent individuals is strongly valued
