Moving & Storage Specialist

The Moving and Storage Specialist is responsible for monitoring the University's residential facilities (5000 bed spaces) and taking corrective actions when necessary to ensure that all aspects of the physical environment are up to departmental & University standards. This includes moving, storing, and repairing property, equipment, and supplies. This position performs weekly inspections of the residence halls and assists with inventory control of furnishings and supplies. The Moving and Storage Specialist also responds to student requests for repairs or corrections, assists with the supervision of student employees, and provides support for the Housing Facilities Manager and the Assistant Director of Housing Facilities. This position interacts with other University departments in the general maintenance of the residence halls.

Moving, Storage, Repair

  • Distributes, relocates, and stores university property
  • Prepares office and residence hall furniture for moving and storage
  • Responds to student requests initialized through the on-line work order system
  • Performs needed furniture and equipment repair
  • Continually monitors and maintains an accurate inventory of all attic stock furniture and job-related supplies

Maintenance, Inspection, & Supervision

  • Inspects all residence halls on a weekly basis
  • Notes conditions that are substandard and reports them to the Housing Facilities Manager
  • Performs corrective actions where necessary
  • Assists with the supervision and direction of student staff
  • Keeps department storage facilities clean and orderly

Facilities Support

  • Escorts contract services personnel through the residence halls for corrective action related to those services
  • Assists with the scheduling and supervision of special projects including furniture replacement, facilities upgrades, and other projects as assigned
  • Supports the Housing Facilities Manager to ensure that all residence halls are ready for occupancy at the beginning of each academic year

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of related work experience
  • Must possess a valid non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent and be qualified to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Maryland

Skill in operating warehouse material handling equipment; in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to lead and train others in packing and moving furnishings, materials, and equipment; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to follow directions; to read, comprehend and apply OSHA/MOSHA requirements; to perform extensive standing, walking, climbing and frequent heavy lifting; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in a facilities management setting
  • Experience with property control and inventory management
