The Department of Geography is seeking an experienced administrator to contribute towards the delivery of its portfolio of postgraduate courses.

The Department of Geography (incorporating the Scott Polar Research Institute) is a highly interdisciplinary department that has 40 academic, 25 research and 45 support staff; teaches 300 undergraduate and 160 postgraduate students at any one time; and holds approximately 70 active research grants of a total value of about GBP 9m.

The Department offers five MPhil programmes - Geography, Conservation Leadership, Polar Studies, Anthropocene Studies and Past and Future Climates - with a combined annual intake of approximately 65 students, and there are approximately 95 PhD students at any one time. Administrative support is provided by the Postgraduate Administrator, who is the first point of contact and administrative lead for postgraduate matters in the Department, assisted by the Teaching Administrator, who shares their time between support for the Department's postgraduate and undergraduate activities. Four of the MPhil courses have additional dedicated administrative support.

The role-holder provides comprehensive administrative support for two Master's courses, in Anthropocene Studies and Past and Future Climates, which together recruit approximately 25 students per year. This includes responsibility for the drafting and maintenance of course and recruitment materials, co-ordination of the teaching and assessment programme, and the provision of advice and guidance to staff, students and potential students.

In consultation with the Postgraduate Administrator, the post holder will manage the annual admissions procedure and maintain student records, using relevant University information systems and liaising with other University departments, central offices and colleges as appropriate.

The post holder will work closely with the two academic Course Directors and Deputy Directors, the Senior Examiners and the Postgraduate Administrator to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the courses and a positive experience for the students.

As a member of the wider learning and teaching administration team, the MPhil Co-ordinator will also provide support in other areas of the Department's course provision, as time allows.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 7 January 2028 in the first instance.
