- Teach voice lessons and studio classes to students in the MM Vocal Performance, BFA Vocal Performance, BFA Versatile Voice, BFA Music Education, BFA Musical Theatre, and BA programs.
- Teach one or more courses on the following topics: Vocal Pedagogy, Song Literature, Lyric Diction, Class Voice, Vocal Performance in Popular Music Styles, Opera Workshop.
- Assist with voice area administration, including coordination of voice area activities, auditions, juries, TA oversight, scholarship allocation, guest artist residencies, and masterclasses, and voice area load assignments.
- Connect with area secondary choral programs and voice instructors, actively recruit potential undergraduate and graduate voice majors, and help coordinate voice area recruitment activities.
- The successful candidate will maintain an active program of creative and scholarly work consistent with tenure-track expectations. This may include professional performances across a variety of styles, publications, presentations, recordings, premieres, or interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Serve on the University, College of the Arts and Architecture, Peck School of the Arts, and Music Department committees as assigned and participate in faculty meetings.
- Engage in institutional and professional service appropriate to a tenure-track faculty member.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee seeks applications for a full-time Assistant Professor tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Music beginning Fall 2026. The Department of Music seeks an experienced voice teacher and performer, appointed at the level of assistant professor commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be a trained performer and pedagogue with experience performing and teaching in both classical and non-classical styles (including music theater, commercial music, jazz, etc.) and will embrace the aesthetic and educational value of versatile vocal training and singing in a variety of styles. The successful candidate will assist with leadership in all aspects of the voice area; teach lessons and studio classes to voice students in the MM, BFA, and BA programs; teach courses related to vocal performance and pedagogy; help coordinate vocal festivals and shadow days for pre-college students; connect with area secondary choral programs and voice instructors to recruit students for UWM and provide support for regional vocal education; maintain an active schedule of research and/or creative activity; and participate in a full range of faculty governance and service activities within the University and Department of Music.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in vocal performance and/or pedagogy OR equivalent professional experience and a master's degree in music (ABD candidates with a determined expected date for completion will be considered).
- A minimum of five years of successful voice teaching.
- Evidence of training, performance, and/or teaching in both classical and non-classical vocal styles.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting voice students.
- Evidence of relevant scholarly and/or creative work (including performing) and professional activity appropriate for career stage.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in Vocal Performance and/or Pedagogy or a significant national or international reputation as a performer or pedagogue.
- Seven or more years of successful voice teaching with at least two years employment as a collegiate voice instructor beyond graduate assistantships.
- Demonstration of a clear and engaging teaching style that encourages technically sound, healthy, stylistically informed, and expressive singing.
- Evidence of expertise and significant teaching experience in both classical and non-classical vocal techniques and styles.
- Demonstration of high-quality, professional-level vocal performance skills. All voice types are welcome, with soprano or mezzo voice type preferred.
- A distinguished record of professional performances and/or research, presentations, and publications as well as a history of recognized awards or honors in the field of vocal performance.
- A documented record of successful recruitment of collegiate voice majors.
- Evidence of student success in significant artistic and/or academic opportunities, including admission to advanced degree programs, professional engagements, competition recognition, and/or voice-related research.
- Active participation and leadership in relevant professional organizations.
Additional Requirements:
Finalists for this position will require a criminal record review consistent with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act.
Compensation:
The target hiring range is $60,000 - $65,000. Final salary offer is contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as demonstrated throughout the selection process.
