Music Librarian
Arizona State University Library is recruiting a collaborative Music Librarian. This position is situated within the Engagement and Learning Services Directorate, Humanities Division, and will be physically located in the ASU Music Library on the Tempe Campus. The Music Librarian provides leadership and specialized expertise in the development, organization, and delivery of music collections and services that support teaching, learning, and research in music and related disciplines. The librarian serves as the primary liaison to the School or Department of Music, offering instruction, reference, and collection development, and may also oversee the management of sound recordings, scores, and archival materials.
The Humanities Division comprises a team of librarians dedicated to shaping the future of instructional support and research endeavors for students and faculty at ASU. The Humanities Division's portfolio of responsibilities is broad, encompassing the arts with high levels of interdisciplinary engagement. Reporting to the Head of the Humanities Division, the successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of scholarly information across the humanities and will connect learners across ASU’s physical campuses and online programs to library information, resources, and services. This individual will also work with campus partners across departments, centers, and institutes to build strong multidisciplinary relationships supporting research and student success.
Essential Functions:
Collection Development & Management
- Select, acquire, and maintain music materials in all formats (scores, books, periodicals, recordings, digital media).
- Evaluate and manage subscriptions to music databases and streaming services.
- Collaborate with faculty to align the collection with curriculum and research needs.
- Collaborate with cataloging and metadata creation for music materials, ensuring accurate description and discoverability.
Instruction & Reference
- Provide research assistance and information literacy instruction to students and faculty.
- Develop online guides, tutorials, and workshops for music resources and research tools.
- Collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy and music research skills into coursework.
Liaison & Outreach
- Serve as primary contact between the library and the music department/faculty.
- Support faculty research and performance needs, including score preparation and access to materials.
- Promote the library’s music collections through exhibits, events, and digital initiatives.
Technical & Administrative Duties
- Manage budget allocations for music materials.
- Contribute to library committees, planning, and assessment initiatives.
The Music Librarian fulfills the responsibilities expected of continuing appointment track Academic Professionals, including position effectiveness, professional contributions, service, and collaboration and partnership.

Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an American Library Association-accredited program or equivalent advanced degree by the hire date.
- An undergraduate degree in music, musicology, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in music, musicology, or a related field
- Library experience providing services and support to humanities disciplines
- Experience providing reference consultations
- Experience providing instructional services
- Experience with digital humanities
- Demonstrated understanding of the research process and lifecycle in the humanities
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Salary and Rank:
This is a continuing appointment track Academic Professional position; Assistant/Associate Librarian rank and salary depend on experience. Early career professionals are encouraged to apply.
